About the Position
The Electrical Trades I performs apprentice electrician level work while working with our licensed electricians to ensure the Region traffic electrical equipment is functioning properly at all times. Assists with equipment with dedicated power sources and solar power sources which the unit is responsible for maintaining and operating. Responsible for working on high voltage equipment and buildings peripherals, that other CDOT classifications/positions are unable to maintain or repair.
Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Performs installations, maintenance, repair, and inspection of electrical infrastructure, including but not limited to electrical distribution services, roadway and facility lighting, equipment, and power distribution and inspection of electrical equipment in Region 2.
- Operates equipment such as aerial device, backhoe, loader, trencher, concrete saw, other specialized equipment, and hand and power tools.
- Locate underground cables and utilities for contractors and maintenance; operate utility locating equipment and work around and near live electric, gas, water, and other utility lines.
- Installs, maintains, and inspects Traffic Control Devices and systems within Region 2, which include but are not limited to traffic signals, flashing beacons, lighting, variable message signs, ITS devices, and interconnect systems.
- Installs and maintains temporary traffic control devices in work areas according to current policies and standards.
- Installs, maintains, and inspects communication systems, including but not limited to systems and equipment for intelligent transportation systems, video monitoring and detection, fiber optics, hardwire, and radio systems.
- Uses computers and other office equipment for communications and documentation, such as time sheets, fuel and mileage, job journal, materials, etc.
- Follows safety guidelines and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
- Typical work schedule is four (4) - ten (10) hr days Monday through Thursday. This schedule may change as needed.
- On average, 20% of the work hours are spent in an office setting and 80% in the field.
- The average work week is 40 hours a week, with periodic overtime due to emergencies or inclement weather.
- Required to work on ladders and/or bucket trucks at heights from 10-80 feet.
- Occasional in-state/overnight travel.
- Frequent travel during work day for training, meetings, and assigned work orders.
- Required to drive CDOT vehicles and equipment.
- Work around live electric, gas, water, and other utility lines.
- Exposure to loud noises.
- Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes, and skin.
- Exposure to High Voltage (anything over 600 V) and electrical shock.
- Required to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions for long periods of time - hot and cold.
- Required to use computers to accomplish everyday work duties.
- Due to locations of some of the equipment, must be physically able to work at 11,000 feet altitude
- Must be able to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions
- Required to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime, including weekends and holidays
