STATEMENT OF DUTIES
General Statement Of Duties:
Provides supervision to a probation unit, units, or probation staff which includes establishing operating procedures and assisting in administering probation programs. Assists in the daily operations of the Probation Department, fiscally manages offender services, supervises multiple staff and programs, monitors caseload progress and performs case reviews and other methods of quality assurance.
Distinguishing Factors:
The Probation Supervisor position is distinguished from line officer classifications due to formalized supervisory responsibilities. This position may act as the Chief Probation Officer in the Chief Probation Officer’s absence.

1. Probation Supervisors are instrumental in the implementation of new programs and initiatives. In one page or less, describe the steps you would take to implement an initiative or new program to address the following problem:
The overall success rate of maximum adult supervision cases, not including intensive programs, over the past three years is 21.6% in your district (FY19 – 28%, FY20 – 23%, FY21 – 14%). The State average success rate for maximum supervision adult cases during the same period is 38%. The primary reasons for revocation of probation are technical violations that include failure to report, positive or missed drug tests and failure to comply with treatment.
2. Please describe in one page or less how you lead people.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assigns duties and responsibilities.
Reviews, approves and makes recommendations on subordinates’ work. May provide coverage for subordinate work or find replacement coverage.
Attends meetings and training as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS CONT.
Supervisor Responsibilities:
Has supervisory accountability for other employees. Plans, directs and coordinates activities for a unit, units, or probation staff. Duties may include scheduling and assigning of work, training in all facets of work, quality control, and decisions impacting the pay, status and tenure of others.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education:
Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from a four-year accredited college or university with major course work preferably in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, Social Work or a related field and three years of criminal justice experience. In addition to the experience and education, the applicant must have successfully completed one of the following:
The Probation "Super Series" Training (18 hours of short courses plus the Orientation to Supervision/Management Course offered by the Division of Probation Services. A copy of the certificate of completion of the Orientation to Supervision and the official Colorado Judicial transcript list with the completed short courses highlighted is required to be submitted with the application.); OR
The Judicial Executive Development Institute (JEDI) (copies of transcripts are required to be submitted with the application);
OR
Supervised five or more paid employees in a Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, Social Work or a related field for one year in addition to the three years of criminal justice experience and bachelor’s degree as described above. Supervision of staff includes planning, directing and coordinating activities; scheduling and assigning work; coaching and mentoring; providing performance feedback and conducting performance appraisals.
Upon hire and as a condition of continued employment, the employee must:
Complete Mandatory New Employee Training required by the Colorado Judicial Branch.
Complete all other trainings as required by Colorado Probation policies and standards including safety training.
May be required to complete Orientation to Supervision.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Individuals will be required to successfully complete the safety training per state policy. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. This position is subject to varying and unpredictable situations; may handle emergency or crisis situations; is subject to many interruptions; may handle multiple calls, e-mails, and inquiries simultaneously; and may occasionally handle absentee replacement on short notice.
