Special Projects and Events Coordinator

ABOUT THIS POSITION

Summary :

The Water Center is hiring a temporary part-time special projects and events coordinator for 2025.

The Water Center's mission is to perform and facilitate interdisciplinary and collaborative research, education, outreach, and dialogue to provide CMU students, citizens, scholars, and policy makers with the information they need to address water issues facing Western Colorado and the Upper Colorado River Basin.

Colorado Mesa University sits at the confluence of two great rivers central to water management challenges in Colorado and the West. For more than a decade, the Water Center has worked on partnerships to address these challenges, creating the social fabric within the Western Slope and Grand Valley water community and building a pipeline for tomorrow's water leaders. The Water Center's focus is on education and the promotion of open, respectful, well-informed, and factual discussion among diverse stakeholders to promote creative thinking and fact-based analysis to address the region's water resource challenges.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Organize the following Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB)-funded events and projects between March and December 2025. Special Projects and Events Coordinator will report directly to the Faculty Director.

1) Educators' workshop on environmental justice and water equity - a one-day workshop for college and high school educators to learn how to better integrate the topic of environmental justice and water equity into their curriculum.

  • Expected time commitment : no more than 150 hours

2) Spring Water Course Seminar. This seminar is a spring five-week course series that meets once a week for approximately three hours in the evenings and is open to the public. Students taking the course for credit meet on the first and final evenings to discuss regional water issues, while speakers are invited to discuss fundamental water topics in the other evenings.

  • Expected time commitment to assist Faculty Director : no more than 60 hours.
  • Responsibilities for events #1 and #2 above : select and invite speakers from the water community and relevant organizations for events, following approval by Faculty Director and / or Water Center's Advisory Council (mainly for Event #1); develop, plan, and administer event program, agenda, and logistics; marketing; register and provide learning credits for attendees; create, collect, and analyze attendees' surveys; participate in event; write and submit progress reports to CWCB.

    3) Water workforce assessment follow up study. This study uses results from the 2021 Water Center's workforce needs assessment to improve CMU curriculum and Water Center programming to better prepare students for the water workforce.

  • Expected time commitment : no more than 180 hours
  • Responsibilities for Project #3 : review 2021 study to identify the biggest areas of needs; work with faculty and Advisory Council members to review and assess alignment of current CMU curriculum and Water Center programming with 2021 gaps; share findings with faculty, department heads, and Advisory Council; work with faculty, department heads, and Advisor Council to develop and incorporate solutions into CMU curriculum and Water Center programming; write and submit progress report to CWCB.

    Minimum Qualifications Required :

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Six months of experience in a related water field which may include the nonprofit sector, environmental science, engineering, or natural resources.
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills and strong organizational skills.
  • General familiarity with Colorado River water issues
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Master's degree in a related field (public or non-profit administration, environmental or natural resources science, engineering).
  • Two years of experience in educational programs and curriculum development.
  • Hourly Rate : $33.00-$55.00 per hour based on experience, not exceeding $12,870.00 total for the duration of assignment.
