JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Media Department Director, The Newspaper Manager is responsible for the publication of the official newspaper of the Colorado River Indian Tribes. The CRIT Media Department publishes a monthly tribal newspaper specifically representing the Colorado River Indian Tribes, and Tribal Community of Western Arizona and Eastern California. The Newspaper Manager endeavors to fully represent local, regional, state, and national news of interest to the Colorado River Indian Tribes and the membership.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
The Newspaper Manager encompasses all duties and skills related to publishing the newspaper; physically collecting information for articles, other components that make up the newspaper, layout of the newspaper, all elements related to advertisements, general and special content, conducting interviews, writing stories, reporting on community events with accompanying photography. Responsible for editing as needed from inception, design and concept, to layout design, printing and distribution. The Newspaper Manager is responsible for every job description listed below, in every aspect and in all capacities, for the Manataba Messenger.
- Work with various people under deadlines and the pressures that come with deadlines
- Create and design and/or coordinate with industry professionals to create and design advertising and advertising campaigns to be sold to programs and businesses for the newspaper
- Continually identify target audiences, and how to reach through advertising
- Familiarity with advertising contracts and negotiations of contracts on behalf of the newspaper, in order to generate revenue
- Thrive in a competitive media environment
- The Newspaper Manager may be responsible for other duties and responsibilities as assigned and as they apply to the support and day to day operation CRIT Media Department
Duties as Layout and Design/Graphic Designer
- Make effective decisions on time sensitive issues
- Prepare and manage all newspaper submissions; from advertising to articles and stories
- Work quickly under pressure when confronted with production and software issues and press deadlines
- Meet all deadlines pertaining to newspaper and press scheduling
- Submit for approval to the Media Department Director the final layout of The Manataba Messenger
- Responsible for newspaper inspection at press to ensure high quality and standards are maintained for the Colorado River Indian Tribes
Duties as Writer/Photographer
- Set up and Maintain appointments at a professional standard
- Attend and report on meetings as requested by Tribal Council and/or the Media Director
- Travel to attend meetings and events after normal business hours to report for the Media Department when needed
- Type and transfer articles and written submissions in compatible software for layout
- Work efficiently and productively to meet a strict deadline schedule
- Suggest story ideas and interviews
- Write, report and photograph
- Provide quality assurance through error-free copy that meets all production deadlines
Duties as Editor
- Demonstrate good judgment and strong sense of ethics
- Review and edit the work on all submission to the newspaper prior to submitting to Media Director for approval
- Responsible forthe overall content and management of newspaper each month
- Edit all submissions to newspaper for accuracy, relevancy, clarity and authenticity
- Submit newspaper monthly to Media Director for review prior to publishing
Duties as Distributor
- Must be responsible and organized and prepared to convince businesses and various locations to carry the newspaper, in-order to further the distribution routes
- Must provide excellent customer service at all times
- Duties require a substantial amount of travel
- Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of the culture and customs of Native American people, specifically the Colorado River Indian Tribes

- Physical ability to lift 50 pounds
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma/GED
- Valid driver’s license
- Three (3) years ofexperience in newspaper production
- Must type 70 words per minute
PREFERRED QUILIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications or English from an accredited university OR the equivalent knowledge, skill, ability and experience to satisfy all components of this position
- Proficient with professional DSLR camera and other digital cameras
- Proficient in Quark or CS2 Adobe or newer versions of these programs
- Preference to experience gained in Indian Country
