Gas Pipeline Integrity Engineer IV

This job is eligible for relocation assistance to Colorado Springs.

Our Gas Operations Engineering Group is responsible for providing operational support, engineering, and planning services for Colorado Springs Utilities' natural gas distribution infrastructure. Our distribution system is comprised of more than 5,000 miles of gas mains and services, serving over 200,000 customers. We are hiring a Gas Pipeline Integrity Engineer IV with extensive knowledge of federal and state gas pipeline safety regulations, along with skills in analyzing and interpreting pipeline leak and damage data to ensure the prevention and resolution of pipeline infrastructure problems across Colorado Springs’ natural gas system. The work that you do will directly impact the current and future safety and reliability of Colorado Springs’ natural gas infrastructure. 

You will be the expert for the Leak Management Program that supports the Distribution Integrity Management Program (DIMP). Both of these programs outline how we manage, classify, and resolve gas pipeline leaks, which ensures our adherence to Title 49 CFR Part 192 for gas compliance and safety. You will work closely with field personnel to accurately capture necessary data and ensure crews are properly trained and supported. You will also become a data guru through analyzing and interpreting gas pipeline leak and damage data to support the safety, integrity, and reliability of Colorado Springs’ natural gas infrastructure.

What Else Will You be Doing?

  • Supporting Leak Program and DIMP Plans
    • Monitoring Leak Program compliance and hosting monthly Program meetings with contributing stakeholders to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for leak surveys, classifications, re-checks, lost gas calculations, repairs, and patrolling activities
    • Refine and maintain an effective Leak Management Program, to include developing and maintaining Power BI dashboards to monitor Leak Program compliance
    • Maintaining the Utilities’ Leak Rate Model and assisting with DIMP Risk Model runs to help prioritize pipeline infrastructure projects
    • Developing and implementing advanced leak detection and methane recapture projects in collaboration with operations and construction
  • Managing and Trending Leak Data for Services and Mains
    • Identifying and reporting trends associated with leaks, defining criteria for the classification of leak-prone pipe, and recommending additional actions through root-cause analysis
    • Identifying appropriate leak survey frequencies for mains and services by investigating materials, locations, and cathodic protection statuses
    • Leading data validation, migration, and programmatic process improvement projects
    • Assisting with the development, implementation, and maintenance of ESRI GIS-based mobile data collection and applications
  • Performing Leak Repair As-Built Reviews
    • Performing as-built reviews on all projects completed due to leak or damage repair/replacement before jobs are mapped into GIS database
    • Supporting Gas Construction, Operations and Maintenance (GCOM) Leak Search Crews & Leak Repair Construction Crews
    • Leading the testing (along with key stakeholders) for new leak detection equipment, and interfacing with Asset Management for digitizing results
    • Supporting GCOM maintenance of O&M Manual and developing Design and Engineering sections as needed to maintain the Leak Management Program through technical writing

Who You Are

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering is required - preferably in Mechanical, Materials, Chemical, or Petroleum
  • Demonstrated experience around natural gas distribution
  • Knowledge of applicable federal pipeline safety regulations, including Title 49 CFR Part 192, is valued
  • Experience with ESRI GIS Systems, Microsoft Power BI, and/or Risk Modeling is valued
  • Possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) License and/or Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification is valued
