Description of Work Unit

The Office of Engagement and Extension (OEE) was organized in 2006 to advance CSU's engagement and outreach missions. OEE includes CSU Extension, CSU Extended Campus (including CSU Online), the Colorado Water Center and a variety of vibrant programs that engage the teaching, research, extension, and service missions of Colorado State University. The Vice President for Engagement and Extension (VPEE) is the principal administrative, academic, and fiscal officer for the division, reports to the CSU President, and works closely with the Provost / Executive Vice President. OEE works collaboratively across all Colleges and offices on campus, and has strong engagement programs throughout Colorado, the Western US and globally. At any given time, OEE includes over 400 employees. The total of budgets is approximately $85 million. OEE is one of the most institutionally comprehensive commitments to engagement and outreach among all land-grant and other universities. Propelled by OEE's leadership, nationally CSU is a Carnegie Engaged University (2008, 2014), is a member of the Engagement Scholarship Consortium, is an APLU Innovation and Economic Prosperity University (2016) and is highly ranked for its online degree programs. Annually, CSU Extended Campus garners enrollments of over 10,000 learners and CSU Extension delivers approximately 500,000 educational contacts. Position Summary

The Academic Advisor position within the Academic Services Unit of the Office of Engagement and Extension (OEE) is a full-time twelve-month Administrative Professional position dedicated to serving degree and certificate admitted students within OEE. Academic Advisors provide assistance to students seeking coursework from the CSU Online unit. The Academic Advisor plays a supportive role in strengthening efforts to provide quality advising and promote online student success.

This position supports an innovative and holistic approach to providing students with the assistance, guidance, and resources necessary to complete their programs at a distance. The primary functions of the Academic Advisor are to foster successful transition to the university and online environment in their first semester, provide support and referrals throughout their academic program, and use action plans to promote timely persistence and graduation. Additionally, Academic Advisors can promote exploration of majors / minors / certificates / graduate programs when needed.

The role is hybrid in that individuals are allowed to work remotely. However, this is not a fully remote position. Academic Advisors have in-person meetings on-campus in Fort Collins, CO as needed with the Department and with the Office of Engagement and Extension throughout each semester and must be able to get to the CSU campus whenever necessary.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Completed master's degree from an accredited institution in the area of Higher Education Leadership, Student Affairs Administration, Human Development and Family Studies, Business, or a related field.
  • Completedbachelor's degree from an accredited institution in the area of Higher Education Leadership, Student Affairs Administration, Human Development and Family Studies, Business, or a related field plus a minimum of three years of experience working in a college / university setting with a role working directly with students in an advisory environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with adult, non-traditional, or online student audiences including advising, teaching, and / or working with students as they profess through admission, orientation, enrollment, or degree-completion processes.
  • Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a driver's license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
  • Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Five or more years of experience in a higher education setting working directly with students in an advisory service capacity.
  • One or more years of experience working directly with online students in a higher education setting.
  • Experience using university student information systems and learning management systems such as Banner (SunGard systems), EAB Navigate, Salesforce, Canvas, etc.
  • Strong analytical skills demonstrated through the use of tracking data and extracting meaning used in outreach and support to students.
  • Experience working from a distance from the student and using technology to connect, build relationships, and motivate students.
  • Demonstrated ability to do detailed work, prioritize multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including demonstrated ability to guide new and continuing students through advising processes while utilizing professional expertise in contemporary advising and student success theories.

  • Advise current and prospective online degree students.
  • Provide support for students going through transitions, degree selection and progress to graduation.
  • Provide comprehensive advising to new students and develop a continuous advising relationship with students through graduation.
  • Provide attention to students struggling to adjust to demands of online courses and learning environment.
  • Work with FERPA Guidelines to uphold student's privacy.
  • Work with students to develop an academic plan.
  • Proactive outreach and tracking.
  • Attention to data and patterns of success / difficulty.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of a comprehensive assessment plan for advising services.
  • Develop connection to campus resources and opportunities.
  • Participate in strategic interventions with the Office of Engagement and Extension and across campus.
  • Assist current students and prospective students to understand degree curriculum and transfer of previously earned credits.
  • Develop familiarity with issues certain populations of students may face (non-traditional students, students of color, first generation college students, returning athletes) and incorporate this perspective into developmental advising approaches.

  • Understand and disseminate to stakeholders the ways in which students learning from a distance to the CSU campus are a special population.
  • Additional special populations of students that the Academic Advisor will advise include but are not limited to : students reported as at-risk through early warning / alert statuses, students returning to CSU after stopping out, online, students needing tutoring or additional academic supports, student athletes, students with GPAs below the "good academic standing" requirement, etc.
  • Advise and retrain specific populations of online students.
  • Serve as the student's advocate in resolving matters of academic difficulty, misunderstanding, or confusion.
  • Mentor and educate students regarding policies, procedures, and appeals of the university.
  • Assist students with goal clarification and development of an academic completion plan.
  • Contact students regularly to discuss goal setting and enhancing time management, study skills, self-advocacy, academic success strategies, available campus support resources, and broader topics holistically impacting students (such as : financial concerns, caregiving responsibilities, navigating the university system from a distance, etc.).
