Description of Work Unit
The Department of Animal Sciences at Colorado State University supports Colorado’s vast and diverse equine and livestock industries and is responsible for educating approximately 900 undergraduate and 60 graduate students annually. Programs of study are offered to students majoring in Equine Science and Animal Science. The Equine Science major is supported by nationally recognized teaching, research, and outreach programs and consists of 11 faculty members and over 350 undergraduate and graduate students. The CSU main campus sits at the eastern base of the Rocky Mountains one hour north of metro Denver. This location offers excellent access to transportation, all outdoor interests, and a broad cross-section of equine and livestock industries and their trade organizations. The Equine Science Program at the Foothills Campus is housed on approximately 80 acres and is home to four barns, three indoor arenas, an outdoor arena, multiple indoor stalls and outdoor pens. The Temple Grandin Equine Center (TGEC) is the newest facility at the Foothills Campus and will be home to CSU’s equine-assisted services program, education, and research. The TGEC has a second location of programming located at the CSU Spur Campus in Denver, CO at the National Western Center.

Position Summary
This position will have daily oversight of the equine-assisted services being provided at the TGEC CSU Spur facility, including, but not limited to acting as the equine specialist working with providers and volunteers to ensure all necessary safety and other standards are followed.

Required Job Qualifications
  • Current credentials from PATH Intl as a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, communication, organization, and complex problem solving skills
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite, and ability to operate in a highly computerized environment
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date

Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Advanced or Master Level PATH Intl CTRI.
  • Experience coordinating ongoing programming and community engagement
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity and ability to work with various audiences and clientele

  • Monitor and/or participate in EAS appointments.
  • Ensure implementation of and compliance with facility policies, including PATH standards.
  • Assist Coordinator with facility and program schedule.
  • Assist Equine Manager with equine use, conditioning and training schedule.
  • Assist with general volunteer coordination and training.
  • Monitor and maintain appropriate condition and use of equipment, tack, and therapy tools.
  • Assist in providing instructions to or explanations of EAS programming to staff, interns, students, and volunteers.
  • Act as liaison between providers and other TGEC staff.
