Overview
The Columbus Crew is seeking a Sports Science / Strength and Conditioning Intern to support the Columbus Crew High Performance staff. This internship will allow you to work closely with and collaborate with several staff members from the performance department, and allow you to see how a professional high performance department is run, gaining experience in both the on-field and off-field sport science and strength and conditioning programs.
The position will be structured as a paid internship, with academic credit available for students as needed. The position is predominantly based at the Ohio Health Performance Center (1 Black and Gold Blvd, Columbus, OH, 43211).
Applicants will need to be available for all Columbus Crew training sessions which can be any day of the week (Monday to Sunday), equating to roughly 40 hours per week. Applicants will also need to be familiar with basic sport science and strength and conditioning principles to ensure a smooth transition into the performance department.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in managing the collection and analysis of Crew performance data sets, including but not limited to video screen, readiness to train, wellness, training, fatigue monitoring, and training load data.
- Assist with setting up the gym for resistance training sessions.
- Assist strength and conditioning coach with running the resistance training sessions.
- Assist with the set up and pack-up of sport science equipment for on-field training sessions.
- Assist with the collection of strength and power testing data.
Requirements
- Minimum of 21 years old with a valid driver’s license.
- Currently in senior year, or has already graduated from an Exercise Science / Human Movement or similar degree.
- Passion for Sport Science / Strength and Conditioning at the professional sporting level.
- An understanding of several strength and conditioning principles such as Periodization, exercise prescription, and programming.
- An understanding of all resistance training methods (Hypertrophy, Strength, Power, Muscular Endurance, etc.) and how they would be programmed within a gym setting.
- A basic understanding of the different modalities used to assess internal and external load.
- A basic understanding of GPS technology and its application.
- Experience using any data organization and analysis application (e.g. Microsoft Excel, R, Python)
- Strong work-ethic and proactive attitude.
- Ability to work on independent assignments; to collaborate with a team; multi-task and problem solve.
Unique Criteria
- Knowledge of the Columbus Crew and Major League Soccer.
- Prior work or volunteer experience in similar roles.
- Columbus Crew are open to discussing the use of their data for research purposes through a student’s institution.
