Job Summary

Purpose of Position :

Upward Bound Student Tutors are responsible for providing academic support for high school students with the goal of improving participant grades in core classes.

This position is open to students with or without Federal Work Study eligibility.

Duties and Responsibilities :

1) Provide individual and group tutoring for participants

2) Assist participants with study methods and test taking strategies

3) Communicate behavior issues and other areas requiring attention to UB admin staff

4) Participate in meetings and other sessions as needed

5) Maintain privacy and confidentiality of student records and other sensitive information.

6) Fosters and maintains a safe environment of respect and inclusion for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community.

7) Work a consistent, reliable schedule and exhibits regular and punctual attendance.

8) Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

Knowledge of : Desired tutoring subject(s).

Skill in : Verbal and written communication; organization; customer service; conflict resolution; application of job software including MS Office suite and MS Teams for virtual tutoring; planning and scheduling.

Ability to : Develop and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, participants, general public, and with persons of varying cultures and diversity; work independently demonstrating initiative; maintain confidential and sensitive information; use good judgment; problem solve effectively; apply analytical thinking; maintain accurate and complete work records.

Minimum / General Qualifications :

This position requires that any applicant be enrolled as a current student at Columbus State in three or more credit hours in a degree or certificate seeking program. This position requires applicants to have Federal Work Study as part of their current Financial Aid package with Columbus State. You must also be enrolled in SIX or more credit hours in a degree or certificate program. Any applicants without Federal Work Study eligibility will not be considered for this position.

Applicants must have received a high school diploma or a certificate of attendance from an accredited secondary school or a certificate of high school equivalence and be exempt from Ohio Revised Code Chapter 4109.

Must have reliable transportation or other means to get to work regularly.

Students enrolled as Transient, College Credit Plus, Undecided, or otherwise non-degree-seeking are not considered eligible for Student Employment.

Schedule :

TBD by the needs of department and student schedule between program hours of :

• Tuesday & Wednesday - 3 : 00-5 : 00pm (on-campus)
• Tuesday & Wednesday - 6 : 00-7 : 30pm (virtual)
• Thursday - 3 : 30-5 : 30pm (virtual)

Maximum 20 hours per week.

Work will be performed : Hybrid of Remote and On-Site.

The program consists of brief, structured conversations between supervisor and student to reflect on and integrate what they are learning. All student employees and their functional supervisors participate in this program during Autumn and Spring semesters.

Career and Leadership Development Program (CLDP)

The program consists of paid competency-based career and leadership development activities designed by Career Services. All Tier / Level III positions are automatically enrolled in this program.
