Responsibilities

Primarily responsible for all aspects of the daily care, routine, and security, related to animal programs which may include a focal management area (eg. rhino, invertebrates, carnivores).  Serve as primary front in presenting animal/wildlife management programs to our visitors. 

 

Animal Care and Management

  • Perform all aspects of daily care for animal management programs, including rhino, pasture, carnivore, etc.
  • Participate in conservation and management programs related to designated care areas.
  • Operate tools, equipment, and vehicles to complete the care of animals and facilities.
  • Ensure the security of animals and visitors in animal program facilities.

Research, Health, and Communication

  • Understand and participate in achieving departmental goals and priorities for animal and wildlife management programs.
  • Assist with the implementation of research projects and data collection.
  • Work closely with the Conservation Medicine department to ensure the health of animal programs.
  • Accurately record and communicate daily activities within designated care areas.

Training, Education, and Mission Support

  • Assist with training programs and mentoring entry-level specialists, seasonal team members, and interns.
  • Lead tours and education programs related to the department.
  • Implement sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
  • Constantly strive to further the mission of the organization and support the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks.

 

Qualifications

Required Experience and Education

  • Minimum six months paid experience in specific areas related to animal and wildlife management and conservation programs.
  • Bachelor’s degree in zoology, animal science, biology, or a relevant field, or four years of relevant zoo keeping experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to operate various vehicles and equipment and perform a wide variety of physical labor.
  • Positive professional attitude.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to plan and organize work efficiently and cost-effectively without direct supervision.
  • Excellent guest service skills, including positive interaction with guests and upholding guest service standards.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with all Columbus Zoo Family of Parks team members and contacts.
  • Adherence to standard operating procedures, including safety protocols.

Certifications and Screenings

  • Valid state-issued motor vehicle operator’s license and a good driving record.
  • Proof of a negative TB screening prior to placement and annually thereafter.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening.
  • Successful completion of a criminal history background check annually.
