Salary Range: $155,000 - $160,000 Per Year
CommonBond invites qualified candidates to apply for our Director of Accounting role at our Central Office located in Saint Paul, MN. Reporting to the CFO, the Director of Accounting is responsible for leading a team and overseeing all accounting functions ensuring strong internal controls and high integrity for all financial reporting in compliance with GAAP and all regulatory requirements. The Director is responsible for financial policies, accounting operations, financial reporting, and budgeting for the consolidated non-profit and for-profit, entities, and properties and partnerships. They collaborate with other departmental leaders to support compliance and efficiencies related to accounting across the organization. They are a key strategic partner to the CFO in providing financial guidance to the organization.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND ASSOCIATED TASKS
Oversee and manage all accounting functions
- Develop and implement financial policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
- Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard the organization’s assets
- Lead the monthly, quarterly and annual financial close process
- Oversee the preparation of all necessary financial statements, and ensure that all internal and external financial reporting is accurate, timely, and in accordance with GAAP
- Ensure the processing of all account payables, receivables and payroll is accurate, timely and efficient
- Monitor the accuracy of financial data and ensure that all financial transactions are properly recorded
- Analyze financial data for patterns, trends, and recommend corrective action as necessary
- Coordinate and direct the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts
- Be a thought leader towards continuous improvement of accounting policies, procedures, and financial systems
- Manage the annual audit, coordinating with accounting team, internal partners and external auditors
- Ensure that all financial decisions are in alignment with the organization’s strategic goals
- Establish and maintain effective professional working relationships with internal departments, staff, vendors, and outside agencies
Partner with other key stakeholders for effective organizational leadership
- Provide financial guidance and support to the organization’s leadership
- Collaborate with all leadership to align accounting functions with operational objectives and strategic initiatives
- Identify opportunities for improving processes, systems and reporting tools to streamline operations
- Translate accounting and financial concepts and information for individuals at all levels and varying backgrounds of exposure to them.
Effectively lead and manage the accounting staff to meet organizational objectives
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth
- Lead and mentor the accounting team to develop skills for optimal performance of responsibilities and advancement
- Foster collaboration in team to achieve departmental goals and deliverables.
- Ensure staff receive ongoing training, education, support, and development
- Develop plans for ongoing review and training of corporate policies to ensure all staff understand and follow policies guiding their work.
- Develop strong collaborative team to work effectively together to meet personal and organizational goals

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proven work experience as Accounting Director or similar role
- Proven experience coordinating audit activities, managing reporting, budget development and analysis, AP/AR, general ledger, payroll, and property accounting
- Proficient in the use of MS Office and financial management software, specific proficiency in the use of Yardi
- Experience working with complex consolidated financial statements
- Ability to design and maintain effective internal control procedures
- Excellent knowledge of data analysis and forecasting methods
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities leading to sound decision making
- Effective people management skills for building, mentoring and developing a high-performing team
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy with an ability to think strategically while handling complex, day-to-day operational challenges
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and in collaboration with teams
- Demonstrated experience working within diverse communities, which includes people of various ages, gender, sexual orientations, national origins, income levels, ability levels, religious affiliations, races, and languages
Education and Other Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting or related field
- CPA is required
- 10 years of experience with technical accounting, financial reporting, and GAAP expertise
- 5 years supervising accounting team
- Real estate accounting and multi entity consolidation experiences are an advantage
