Commonspace - Reentry Peer Navigator
Position Overview/Summary:
The Reentry Peer Navigator provides peer support, recovery coaching, and connections to housing, treatment, and other resources to people who are incarcerated and impacted by legal system involvement and substance use disorders. The Reentry Peer Navigator builds supportive relationships with individuals while they are incarcerated, and provides direct and referral supports for at least 90 days post-release, in an effort to support safe, positive community reentry and to reduce the likelihood of relapse and recidivism. The Reentry Peer Navigator works closely and collaboratively with the Pathways for ME grant partners, with the Commonspace Reentry Navigation team, and with Commonspace’s housing, harm reduction, and community center teams.
Responsibilities:
Support peers in connecting with community resources relevant to their specific needs.
· Establish and maintain relationships with people who are incarcerated via targeted inreach.
- Establish and maintain relationships with people who have been recently released from incarceration via outreach.
- Facilitate recovery meetings inside incarceration facilities.
- Maintain a working knowledge of community resources available and how to access them effectively.
- Connect peers to community resources to support housing search, detox, mental health support etc.
- Provide peer support and recovery coaching services.
Contribute collaboratively and individually in support of the program and the agency.
- Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
- Maintain knowledge of and compliance with Commonspace’s policies, procedures, and legal obligations.
- Positively represent Commonspace in the community.
- Actively participate in, assist, and/or facilitate agency activities and initiatives.
- Engage as an effective partner with jail, probation, and other community systems.
- Work collaboratively and cohesively as a partner within the Pathways for ME system workflow
Certifications & Experience
- Personal life experience relatable to that of the peers enrolled in this program AND/OR a demonstrated understanding of and experience with the practice and principles of peer support and of recovery coaching.
- Valid Driver’s License and personal vehicle for work use. - Required
- Intentional Peer Support Certification - Required within 6 months of hire
- Recovery Coach Certificationor willingness to obtain - Preferred
- SMART Recovery Facilitation Certification or willinginess to obtain - Preferred
- CPR & First Aid –Preferred
- NARCAN Response Training –Preferred
Role Presence
- This is a Full-Time onsite Position, with a combination of working hours in the office and in the community.
Physical Requirements
Some of Commonspace’s requirements include:
- Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to ambulate up and down stairs.
- Must be able to lift 15 pounds as necessary.
Working Environment
This position requires working with individuals who may be under the influence of substances, exhibiting mental health symptoms, or present challenging behaviors. Medical and other emergencies may occur in the working environments, including substance overdoses, suicidal ideation and/or self-harm, physical and/or verbal violence; when such events occur contacting emergency services for assistance is essential and required.
