DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The primary role of the Vector Management intern involves supporting Aquatic Biologists in the taxonomic identification of mosquitoes and black flies, commonly referred to as gnats, as part of the West Nile Virus Control and Black Fly Suppression Programs. These insects are significant pests and serve as disease vectors for both humans and various domestic and wild animal species. Accurate species identification is crucial for regional and county personnel, as it informs them about the specific mosquito and black fly species present, which is vital for assessing control requirements. Additionally, interns may participate in molecular testing of samples to detect the presence of arthropod-borne diseases, engage in vector control initiatives aimed at minimizing disease transmission risks, and assist in the sorting of stream macroinvertebrates to evaluate stream health, thereby enhancing their overall educational experience.
