Microbiologist 1

As a Microbiologist 1, you will be responsible for conducting bacterial and viral animal disease diagnostic tests including molecular tests, bacterial isolation, phenotypic and biochemical characterization for the identification of animal pathogens.  You will isolate and identify animal pathogens from diagnostic specimens using complex identification methods, in addition to assisting with the development and validation of laboratory techniques and procedures.  Excellent organizational skills are vital in order to maintain diligent documentation of testing details and results.  You will also have the opportunity to provide periodic reports about testing, and generate test statistics and test quality control charts.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 1 day per month.  In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania.  If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the Pennsylvania Veterinary Laboratory in Harrisburg.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• A bachelor’s degree in microbiology; or
• A bachelor’s degree that includes 20 credits in microbiology, cellular biology, molecular biology or bacteriology and 12 credits in chemistry or biochemistry.
• Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree/credits.
