The Department of Environmental Protection is looking to hire a Sanitarian - Safe Drinking Water Inspector for Lackawanna County. This role is a key professional position within the Safe Drinking Water (SDW) Program. As a Sanitarian, you will be responsible for a range of tasks related to the oversight and regulation of public water systems within a designated geographical area. As an Environmental Trainee, you will embark on a comprehensive 12-month training program designed to enhance your skills and knowledge in the field. Throughout this period, you will receive close supervision and a combination of formal and practical training aimed at equipping you to fulfill the responsibilities of a Sanitarian and to effectively implement the goals of the Safe Drinking Water Program. Your role will primarily involve applying Commonwealth regulations while engaging in surveillance, compliance, and enforcement activities. You will be responsible for conducting inspections, reviewing plans, and addressing inquiries related to private water supply issues, as well as collaborating with other Department programs and state or federal agencies on water-related concerns, including those arising from droughts, floods, and other emergencies. Additionally, you will perform thorough evaluations of public water systems, assessing the adequacy of their sources, facilities, equipment, operations, maintenance, distribution networks, and overall management to ensure they can consistently provide safe drinking water. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to deliver presentations on various safe drinking water topics to diverse audiences, including community groups, local government officials, and school students, while also providing general information to the public as needed.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Scranton.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $44,890.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Four years of technical experience in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or
  • A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training. 
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.


Special Requirement:

  • This position requires possession of an active motor vehicle license.
