The Purpose of the Communities First, Inc. (CFI) Planning and Advocacy Internship Program is to provide a paid opportunity for students enrolled in a university to gain experience working on critical issues of city development, public policy, and equitable development while expanding the capacity of Communities First, Inc.

Position Title: Planning and Advocacy Intern

Internship Length:

  • Fall Semester: 15 Weeks
  • Winter/Spring Semester: 15 Weeks
  • Summer: 12 Weeks

Hours: 10-15 Hours Per Week

Location: In Person or Remote

Description:

The Communities First, Inc. Planning and Advocacy Internship Program is an ongoing program of CFI designed to both expand the capacity of CFI’s community planning and policy advocacy work while providing opportunities for students to use and grow their skills and passion. Targeted at college students currently studying city planning, public policy, social policy, economic development, or similar fields, this program is committed to providing students with a paid opportunity to develop their skills, work closely with community members in crafting solutions to pressing policy issues, work to build more inclusive, equitable, vibrant urban communities, and create meaningful systemic change.

Headquartered in Flint with additional offices in Detroit, Communities First, Inc. is a 501c3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to build healthy, vibrant communities through economic development, affordable housing, and innovative programming. Serving over 35,000 people each year in Michigan and Indiana, CFI is one of the largest Black-led real estate development organizations in the State of Michigan with a growing presence throughout the Midwest.

Interns will work under the supervision of CFI’s Planning and Advocacy Manager and will be assigned regular tasks from their supervisor as well as create initiatives and assignments that they craft themselves. CFI is committed to this paid internship being an opportunity that benefits both the organization and the personal and professional development goals of the intern.
