POSITION SUMMARY BROAD FUNCTION:
Under the daily supervision of the Lead Teacher, the Teacher Aide supports the teaching team with all aspects of classroom and child supervision and care. The position is responsible for child health, development, and safety, and for ensuring program rules, applicable laws, and agency policies and protocols, are followed. Other duties will, from time to time, be assigned.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Provide a welcoming, nurturing and trauma-informed experience for students (Priority function 50/100)
a. Individually demonstrate understanding and implementation of practices that align with the Conscious Discipline® approach, including the Seven Powers and Skills, school family concepts, and Brain Smart Start practices.
b. Carry out classroom activities and practices that support child growth and development, physical, mental, and dental health, and child independence and literacy.
c. Cooperate with the classroom teaching team to implement appropriate lesson plans.
d. Assist with keeping the classroom and playgrounds clean, organized and stocked, and engaging for children.
2. Ensure regulations and policies are followed (Priority function 25/100)
a. Taking direction from the teaching team, help ensure the care provided and classroom work aligns with Head Start Program Performance Standards, Kansas Child Care Licensing regulations, Child and Adult Care Food Program requirements, and other applicable policies, processes, and protocols.
b. Engage as directed in data collection and recording.
3. Actively support family engagement and parental development (Priority function 10/100)
a. Welcome parents as classroom volunteers and support them in meaningful engagement while in the room.
4. Behave and develop as a professional and share skills and talents (Priority function 15/100)
a. Demonstrate welcoming, supportive interactions with new staff and other peers, volunteers, and visiting professionals. Address conflict or concern with adults maturely, respectfully, and promptly, and not in the presence of children.
b. Share unique skill sets or talents professionally as needed. For example, use of a second language, completion of an assessment tool, or curriculum knowledge.
c. Participate fully in individual, division and agency-wide professional development and advancement opportunities. Adopt a continuous growth practice in interacting with technology.
d. Provide objective input for performance evaluations, as requested.
e. Support the professional development of others at Community Action.
f. Learn and begin demonstrating teaching actions that help the classroom team regularly achieve high quality ratings as measured by the CLASS tool.
g. Participate in Community Action events and special activities.
h. Practice adaptability and openness to change as the position and organization evolve.
AUTHORITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY:
The Teacher Aide is delegated full authority necessary for the effective performance of all assigned duties and responsibilities subject to the restrictions, requirements, and terms of the agency’s policies and procedures, applicable local/state/federal laws, and the dictates of sound business judgment, prudence, and ethical conduct. The Teacher Aide is fully accountable to the Lead Teacher in Head Start or Early Classrooms for their performance, which will be measured against the position description and established performance goals.

REQUIRED AT TIME OF HIRE:
- High school diploma or GED
- May not hold or run for a partisan, publicly elected office while working for Community Action.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and comprehend English
- Demonstrated awareness of the challenges and strengths of children and families living with lower incomes and/or special needs
PREFERRED AT TIME OF HIRE:
- Current Child Development Associate® (CDA) appropriate for the classroom assigned from the Council for Professional Recognition, or, an associate degree or greater in child development or early childhood education. Equivalent coursework will be considered for candidates without a degree but have completed 60 or more credit hours.
- Ability to read, write, speak and comprehend Spanish.
- Paid experience in a licensed childcare setting.
ONGOING REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:
- Maintenance of credentials that require renewal, such as the CDA and CPR/First Aid.
- Consent and clearance from a sex offender registry check
- Consent and clearance from a state criminal history check with fingerprints.
- Consent and clearance from a Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal history check with fingerprints.
- Consent and clearance from the Kansas Child and Adult Abuse Registry
- Consent and clearance for all the above background checks on a recurring basis, and at minimum once every five years.
- Compliance with new Kansas Department of Health and Environment regulations for child care centers and updates.
- Compliance with Head Start Program Performance Standards and update
DRIVING RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position may require the operation of either company owned or company-controlled motor vehicles and will be subject to the standards outlined by the corporate motor vehicle insurance policy.
