What are the responsibilities and job description for the Vice President of Academic Affairs position at Community College System of New Hampshire?
General Summary: Reporting to the President, serves as the Chief Academic Officer directing the academic programs, services, and operations of the institution; providing leadership and direction to faculty on curriculum, program development, and teaching effectiveness; and advises the President on all academic matters.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serves as a member of MCC’s leadership team responsible for strategic planning, fiscal management, policy setting, and labor/employee relations.
- Serves as Chief Academic Officer to direct the administration of academic programs, academic budgets and academic personnel matters. Represents the college in academic matters system-wide and within the communities the college serves.
- Oversees budgetary and fiscal affairs:
- Assists the President in the development of the operational and capital budgets, including the determination of academic and workforce capital project needs.
- Produces program, fiscal, and staffing reports for continuous improvement and to meet internal and external reporting needs.
- Manages budgets relating to instruction, assessment, retention, and instructional personnel.
- Applies for and manages grants, including overseeing the Carl D. Perkins grant.
- Responsible for the day-to-day management of department chairs and designated staff. Directs the faculty and academic staff evaluation processes including direct responsibility for department chairpersons and direct reports.
- Manages the college academic departments including goal setting taking into consideration full and part time faculty needs. Approves faculty workload assignments, schedules, and the adjunct faculty assignment process.
- Collaborates effectively with Student Affairs Division particularly in advising and in curricular-related and co-curricular areas.
- Maintains programmatic and institutional accreditation; establishes effective relationships with regional and professional accrediting organizations:
- Responsible for the overall effectiveness of academic programs and the coordination of procedures required for accreditation, including compliance with and reporting on New England Higher Education Commission (NECHE) Standards for Accreditation and external program accreditations.
- Responsible for the overall effectiveness of credit granting instructional programs, the development of course curricula in coordination with instructional staff to meet community needs, and the coordination of academic procedures required for accreditation.
- Leads and collaborates with external partners:
- Partners with colleges and other external organizations to advance the social and economic wellbeing of MCC’s catchment area and New Hampshire.
- Provides direction in the pursuit and implementation of the System's and College's mission and goals.
- Expands student access through outreach efforts to schools, businesses, and the community.
- Supports the development and promotion of articulation agreements with postsecondary institutions and other educational institutions.
- Oversees institutional and academic research and institutional effectiveness activities.
- Supports long-range planning of college through research and strategic planning. Responsible for integrating academic planning and outcomes assessment into the college’s strategic planning process.
- Provides leadership in development of market driven academic programs focusing on student learning and success by overseeing program development.
- Ensures academic integrity of all academic initiatives and programs and compliance with academic standards for completion of degree, certificate, and diploma programs.
- Provides direction in the pursuit and implementation of the System’s and College’s mission and goals with particular emphasis in the areas of academic leadership, program quality, planning, policy development, new program development and college and community relations.
- Monitors operational activities for efficient and effective allocation of campus and college resources and provides the President with appropriate reports. Assists in the development of a college-wide capital budget plan including the determination of academic capital project needs.
- Manifests a collaborative leadership and management style in advancing the college’s mission in expanding outreach into the community for the integration of instruction and ensuring academic integrity of all academic initiatives and programs.
- Complies with all system, college, state and federal rules and regulations.
- Performs other duties assigned by the President.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Qualifications: Master’s degree in a related field and eight (8) years of experience in teaching, program/curricula development, and/or academic administration preferably within higher education.
Additional Desired Qualifications: Doctoral degree. Demonstrated academic leadership, effective communication and interpersonal skills. Experience in strategic planning, budget/financial management, personnel management, and the use of instructional technology. Demonstrated ability to identify, resolve, and consult on a wide range of academic, administrative, and personnel issues while focusing on institutional needs and priorities. Strong organizational and management skills. Administrative experience in a collective bargaining environment.
