Position Overview:
Community Gardens of Tucson (CGT) is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Site Coordinator for the Blue Moon Community Garden. This position focuses on providing direct support to a diverse group of gardeners, including individuals experiencing poverty, trauma, and mental illness. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in working with underserved populations, conflict de-escalation skills, and a passion for fostering community resilience through gardening.
Key Responsibilities:
Garden Operations:
- Oversee day to day operations and maintenance of the Blue Moon Community Garden.
- Ensure the garden is a safe, welcoming, and productive space for all participants.
Community Engagement:
- Build and maintain relationships with garden participants to foster a sense of community and ownership.
- Address conflicts among participants using de-escalation techniques and mediate disputes when necessary.
- Encourage active participation and collaboration in garden activities and decision-making.
Education and Support:
- Provide basic gardening support and connect participants with educational resources, workshops, and tools.
- Collaborate with CGT leadership and local experts to host gardening, nutrition, and sustainability workshops.
Resource Coordination:
- Coordinate the distribution of essential gardening resources, including plant starts and tools.
- Communicate with CGT staff to ensure resources and materials are available to meet the needs of gardeners.
Recordkeeping and Communication:
- Maintain accurate records of garden activities, attendance, and resource distribution.
- Regularly communicate updates, challenges, and success stories to CGT leadership.
Required Qualifications:
- Proven experience working with underserved populations, including individuals experiencing poverty, trauma, and mental illness.
- Strong conflict de-escalation and mediation skills.
- Knowledge of gardening practices or a willingness to learn.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage a diverse group of participants.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Background in social work, community development, or a related field.
- Experience facilitating workshops or community programs.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish is highly desirable.
Work Environment:
This role is primarily based outdoors at the Blue Moon Community Garden. Candidates should be comfortable working in a garden setting and engaging with community members in a variety of weather conditions.
