About the role : In the role of Originations Manager, we are seeking a strategic thinker with experience negotiating and / or administering wholesale power purchase agreements for renewables and storage products. The Origination Manager's primary role is sourcing, negotiating and transacting long-term contracts for various products including renewables, energy and capacity.

This position will report to the Senior Originations Manager.

San Diego Community Power was formed in 2019 as a public, not-for-profit community choice aggregator (CCA) in the San Diego region. We began electric service in 2021 and now serve seven member agencies : the Cities of San Diego, Chula Vista, Encinitas, Imperial Beach, La Mesa and National City, as well as the unincorporated communities of San Diego County. San Diego Community Power was formed to bring local control and customer choice to San Diego while also providing clean and renewable energy at competitive rates. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES

  • Source, negotiate and transact long-term power contracts in alignment with SDCP objectives and compliance requirements including renewable portfolio standards, energy supply hedging, resource adequacy, and carbon-free targets, while maximizing value to SDCP customers.

Key responsibilities include :

  • Prepare solicitations for offers of energy and capacity products, oversee supplier / developer communications, inform and interpret proposal / bid evaluation.
  • Respond to developer inquiries and ad-hoc offers for energy, renewables and capacity as needed.
  • Work closely with consultants and the Power Services team to provide project valuation and risk analysis around complex transactions and SDCP's portfolio position.
  • Lead negotiations for select opportunities in close coordination with external procurement counsel and Sr. Originations Manager.
  • Assist with reporting out to SDCP's management and Energy Contract Working Group on procurement planning and progress, including the development dashboards and visualization for SDCP's planned portfolio.
  • Support the development, modification and enhancement of SDCP's preferred contract structures.
  • Manage the handoff of executed contracts to SDCP's Power Contracts team.
  • Provide input on contract administration and operational optimization to the Power Services team as needed.
  • Other Responsibilities :

  • Assist as needed with SDCP's integrated resource planning and reporting.
  • Assist as needed with SDCP's financial analysis, modeling, budgeting, and rate-setting activities, especially with respect to power supply costs.
  • Monitor markets, technology trends, and project performance to inform future negotiations.
  • Stay abreast of regulatory developments impacting energy markets, risk profiles, and development pipeline.
  • Present in a professional manner to internal and external stakeholders, partners, agencies, and the Board.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITES

  • Strategic thinker with significant experience in regulated wholesale energy markets, with a strong preference for experience with CAISO markets; however, experience in other markets like ERCOT, PJM, etc. are considered as well.
  • Must have demonstrated experience with either leading or supporting the negotiation of power purchase agreements, energy storage agreements, financial and physical hedge agreements, or similar long-term contracts.
  • An understanding of, and experience with, financial models and forecasting.
  • Relevant and applicable experience with energy storage operations is strongly desired (e.g. whether in the role of offtaker, seller, developer, O&M provider, etc.)
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities to meet deadlines and escalate key issues.
  • Strong work ethic and comfort taking initiative.
  • Flexibility and eagerness to collaborate in fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent time management skills, ability to effectively work independently, or in teams on multiple tasks or projects.
  • Professional communications skills, in writing and verbally, as this role works in collaboration with staff and external SDCP contacts.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including extensive use of Excel, and Adobe Pro software.
  • Experience with PowerBI and other data analytics platforms preferred.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a variety of individuals representing diverse cultures, backgrounds, and languages to meet diverse teams and communities.
  • QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    Any combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be : a bachelor's degree from an accredited university in business, economics, engineering or related AND at least five years of progressive experience in electric utility / community choice aggregator ("CCA") power procurement, renewable power procurement, or in a closely related field. An advanced degree can replace up to two years of experience. Experience working in a public utility and / or a CCA program is desirable.

    WORK ENVIROMENT & CONDITIONS

    Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. The position requires occasional carrying, lifting and / or moving objects up to 15 pounds.

    Occasional local travel required, and reliable transportation is expected to be able to attend SDCP events, meetings, and workshops as needed is expected.

    At SDCP we work in the communities we serve and in the office. SDCP works to ensure a safe and healthy workplace for employees and in our communities. SDCP requires employees to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19.     SDCP is an agency required to adopt and promulgate a Conflict-of-Interest Code ("COI"). The COI code requires employees in designated positions, including those identified under the interim disclosure process, to file a Statement of Economic Interests (Form 700) on an annual basis. A Successful candidate accepting this position may be required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.

    Compensation :

    Salary Range : The position salary range is : $159,000 to $200,100; with exact compensation to be determined by SDCP, depending upon experience.

    Benefits : Standard benefits package including but not limited to :

    Insurance : SDCP offers group health benefits, including medical, vision, and dental insurance, for eligible FT employees. Also provided is a $100,000 Life & AD&D policy, STD and LTD coverage that is 100% paid by SDCP.

    Retirement : SDCP offers a 457(b) plan for employee contributions and contributes 10% of eligible compensation to the employee's Money Purchase Plan.

    Paid Time Off : 11 holidays per year paid winter holiday (between 12 / 24-12 / 31), 160 hours of accrued paid time off per year (increases with time in service), and 96 hours per year of accrued paid sick leave.
