TITLE: Day Direct Support Professional II
TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT: Benefited, Full-Time
Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:00pm
POSITION CONCEPT:
The Day DSP II will support people in day programs to experience personal satisfaction and growth through person-centered approaches. The Day DSP II will be responsible to work in conjunction with or in advocacy of the person to develop engaging activities to promote having fun while building life skills and relationships based on their likes, interests and valued outcomes/goals within their Life Plans. The Day DSP II will be responsible for assisting all clinical supports with attaining and maintaining up to date and current information for program participants. This position is responsible for initiating and implementing the mentorship and direct orientation of new team members to the program by modeling/training of the DSP Core Competencies. This position reports directly to the Day Services Manager (DSM). The Day DSP II is a part of each person within day programs support team along with the DSM, the Associate Day Services Manager (ADSM), Qualified Intellectual Disability Professional (QIDP) Facilitator, individualized clinical support personnel, and other key support team members.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work in conjunction with DSM, ADSM, QIDP Facilitator and person to carry out each day program participant’s valued outcomes, goals, person specific safeguards, supports and site-specific safeguards as the documented Staff Action Plan (SAP) and other individualized, site-specific plans.
- Initiate and implement planning and scheduling to provide meaningful activities that support person centered valued outcomes, goals and abiding by safeguards.
- Evaluate and generate new ideas for improved delivery of active programming.
- Evaluate, communicate and track a person’s progress
- Work in conjunction with DSM, ADSM, QIDP Facilitator and other clinical supports to initiate and implement barrier free environments, rich with choices, meaningful activities, and with individual interests reflected in a therapeutic manner within a group setting.
- Directly work alongside clinical supports to initiate and implement daily settings that offer an expansion of barrier free programming through but not limited to: activities, observations and input.
- Directly support and preserve the dignity and well-being of each day person in their daily routine; activities may include, but are not limited to, dining support, lifting, repositioning, assisting in ambulation, crisis/ safety assistance through physical intervention according to behavior plan, first aid, CPR, medication administration and transportation of participants.
- Directly guide, encourage, and support participants to improve, increase or maintain their skills in communication, mobility, physical fitness/health, volunteer opportunities, community inclusion, personal care, and in the use of their self-calming or coping strategies.
- Provide individualized levels of supervision as written within each participants’ individualized plans.
- Initiate and implement open communication with transportation regarding any changes to a person’s safeguards, route pick up/drop off requests.
- The Day DSP II must have a valid driver’s license. They will be responsible for the safe transport of people during the day to/from outing activities. When requested, they will carryover support for the transportation- to and from home during key transit times as assigned.
- Initiate and implement communication with DSM, ADSM, QIDP, and Transit in regard to any preventative care needs or safety concerns when utilizing programmatic vehicles.
- Approach each person’s valued outcome/goal found in the Staff Action Plan, with creativity and encouragement for growth. Implementation, documentation and any other notations completed daily and timely through electronic documentation.
- Run reports in the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system AWARDS to ensure electronic signatures captured contemporaneously.
- Assist clinical support by attaining up to date and current information required and ensure documents uploaded into person’s AWARDS Facesheet.
- Complete additional reports as assigned.
- Maintain open communication with the DSM, ADSM and QIDP by offering feedback for each person in regard to their personal goal progress, communicating any concerns/observations, and suggestions for new goal directions.
- The Day DSP II is a member of each person’s support team. Their feedback and observations are key factors to a person’s success. The DSP II will communicate any person specific observations such as but not limited to, medical/health, day-to-day progress, behavioral/crisis updates to the program DSM, ADSM, QIDP Facilitator, clinical supports, and other key members of the team.
- Have an affinity for working with people. Must have ability to understand and adjust their personal working/communication style to enhance/develop positive and mutually respectful relationships with individuals with intellectual, developmental disabilities, and co-occurring diagnoses.
- Day DSP’s II must be able to raise or lower an object (weighing up to 50 pounds) from one level to another, using hands, arms, and/or shoulders. Includes upward pulling.
- Our DSP’s must be capable of lunging forward and kneeling for extended periods of time.
- The Day DSP II must have physical Stamina to assist with individual care activities and support daily routines.
- The Day DSP II must be able to support each person safely in any area of their day-to-day needs. They must be able to complete and successfully pass initial training and certification (and subsequent re-certification as mandated) including, but not limited to, the following mandated areas: First Aid / CPR certification, Medication certification (AMAP), Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention (SCIP)/SCIP-R training and have a valid driver’s license for driving vans/metros.
- The Day DSP II will demonstrate leadership and mentor new employees to the program team. They will Initiate and implement support and on-the job training to assist employee’s adjustment to their position.
- May participate in individualized meetings for program participants,
- committees both within program and/or outside agency, and with specialized
- training and certificates deliver individualized training such as but not limited to: SCIP, First Aid and CPR.
- The Day DSP II works alongside other Day DSPs. In the event of inclement weather, extreme low census or programmatic need, they may be temporarily redeployed to another Day Program, or an Individual Residential Alternative (IRA)/Residential) based on program needs.
- The Day DSP II will abide by the Code of Ethics for Direct Support Professionals within the structure of CWI’s policies and procedures.
- Actively cooperate with the President/CEO and other staff members in a joint endeavor in achieving the mission statement of CWI. Perform other duties and responsibilities as requested by the CEO and Management Team.
- POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
- Day DSP II should have a High School Diploma or equivalent
- 5 years' experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- Be of good character and background
- Possess a valid driver’s license that meets the agency insurance standards.
- Must have an affinity for working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities
- Be capable of handling all position responsibilities as outlined.
- Demonstrated competency in First Aid, CPR, medication administration, and safety procedures considered a plus.
