TITLE: Employment Counselor
TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT: Benefited 40hr
SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm flexibility required
The Employment Counselor Position Concept:
Support eligible individuals in the development and implementation of a plan to achieve goals related to competitive employment. Facilitate job placement and maintenance, support skill acquisition for employment/promotion, and assist school-aged individuals in transitioning from post-secondary education to adult world options.
The Employment Counselor Responsibilities:
- Actively cooperate with the President/CEO and other staff members in a collaborative effort to achieve the goals of CWI and Competitive Edge.
- Assist assigned individuals in implementing their Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE) or Staff Action Plan (SAP).
- Meet goals for job development and schedule assessments through employer contacts, emphasizing a person-centered approach.
- Make direct placements, whether full or part-time, integrated and competitive, as directed by each individual’s IPE or SAP and in accordance with funding source requirements.
- Serve as a liaison between potential employers in business and industry, funding sources, and the individual.
- Provide on-the-job training as needed to individuals.
- Offer job coaching as assigned, including, but not limited to, transporting individuals to contracted work sites.
- Provide Pre-Employment Transitional Services (Pre-ETS) to students with disabilities (SWD) as assigned and/or school based transition services.
- Be responsible for reports and other documentation required by funding sources and CWI.
- Develop and implement career-readiness training for individuals, including resume development, vocational counseling, employment-seeking skills and development, mock interviews, and career and interest testing.
- Initiate referrals to agencies that can assist individuals with additional needs, such as Social Services, Case Management, etc.
The Employment Counselor Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Human Services, Education or related field. Minimum one-year experience working with people with developmental disabilities or as a coordinator with any population. Demonstrated expertise working in career/vocational counseling role, with experience in job development preferred. Must successfully complete CWI six (6) month probationary period in the Employment Counselor job title to be qualified to provide Pre-ETS services. Experience interacting with school districts/special education staff, in additional to experience in determining eligibility for funding sources, i.e. ACCES-VR, OPWDD, OMH, etc. strongly preferred.
Must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to sell a product or service.
Must have valid NYS driver’s license acceptable to Agency insurance standards. Local travel is required.
