General Summary of Position:
The Payroll Tax Specialist reports to the Payroll Operations Manager and is primarily responsible for the accurate and timely payment and filing of client tax payments and tax returns. In addition, the Payroll Tax Specialist is accountable for researching, processing, and documenting all tax adjustments found through payroll audits and quarterly balancing. The Payroll Tax Specialist will collaborate internally with the Processing Team to ensure clients questions, comments, and concerns are resolved in a timely manner, providing appropriate cause and resolution details to the client.
Essential Duties
Provides complete customer service coverage regarding all areas of payroll tax compliance.
o Prepares customer tax returns for federal, state, city, state unemployment, school districts and BWC True-up reports in an accurate and timely manner.
o Pays all federal, state, local, SUTA/FUTA, school district, and BWC premiums in a prompt and accurate manner.
o Addresses client tax notices in a prompt and accurate manner in keeping with company policy.
o Maintains customer files both active and inactive, including POA (power of attorney)
o Assists in the set-up of the various on-line tax accounts for new clients and those who are expanding.
o Assists in the set-up of 3rd party tax accounts for Compass Payroll.

Maintains competency in the areas of software updates and tax law changes.
o Verifies the accuracy of the various tax form uploads.
o Stays current with payroll tax software updates.
o Keeps abreast of all payroll tax law and filing changes.
o Processes client debit/credits as applicable.
Works with the processing team in a courteous and professional manner to deliver extraordinary customer service and resolve client issues.
o Adheres to established internal procedures for resolving tax notices.
o Reviews and logs Separation of Service documents.
o Assist with the development of process and procedures within the company.
o Reviews, tests, and assist in the evaluation of system software problems and resolutions.
o Identifies areas for product/system improvements and makes recommendations to the Payroll Operations Manager.
o Participates in Company projects as required.
- Minimum 2 to 4 years of experience in the payroll/tax field.
- Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook. Familiarity with the payroll tax concepts, practices and procedures.
- Professional and courteous verbal and email communication skills.
- Ability to address customer issues that promote the organization’s services and core values.
- Capability to rely on experience and good judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
- Ability to perform a variety of complicated tasks.

Desired Education and Experience
- Associate’s degree in a related field preferred
- Payroll processing experience a plus
- FPC or CPP preferred
Physical Requirements (capability(ies) necessary to do day to day duties)
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
