Compassion Without Borders is seeking a bilingual (English/Spanish) Adoption Assistant for our shelter located in Santa Rosa, CA. This is a part-time position working under the supervision of the Adoption Manager. Many of our rescue dogs come from the streets of Mexico and local shelters. Most of our intakes have advanced medical needs beyond local shelters capacity , making for a unique and deeply meaningful adoption experience. Position Overview:
The Adoption Assistant will be responsible for expanding adoption services within the Spanish-speaking community of Sonoma County through targeted outreach, events, and translated materials. This role involves placing adoptable dogs into loving homes, ensuring quality customer service, and making adoptions accessible to all. The Adoption Assistant will engage with adopters in both English and Spanish, providing guidance on adoption policies, animal care, and behavior.
This position offers flexibility but requires weekend and some evening availability for adoption events and community outreach.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Facilitating adoption appointments in both English and Spanish.
- Expanding adoption outreach and events tailored to the Spanish-speaking community.
- Translating adoption materials, contracts, and informational resources to ensure accessibility.
- Engaging with and educating prospective adopters about available dogs to ensure the best match.
- Providing high-quality customer service to all potential adopters, ensuring a welcoming and inclusive experience.
- Assisting volunteers to increase adoptions and community engagement.
- Photographing successful adoptions to share impact stories.
- Communicating adoption policies, answering questions, and guiding potential adopters through the process in a compassionate and professional manner.
- Transporting animals and supplies to and from off-site adoption events.
- Treating all animals humanely and promoting a caring and inclusive attitude towards pet adoption.
- Collaborating with other staff members, volunteers, and foster families to facilitate successful adoptions.
- Coordinating and facilitating community adoption events with a focus on Spanish-speaking residents.
- Managing email and voicemail communications when the Adoption Manager is unavailable.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Fluency in both English and Spanish (written and spoken) is required.
- Strong interpersonal skills—personable, outgoing, patient, and professional.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both languages.
- Passion for animal welfare and a strong commitment to inclusive adoption services.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Maturity, good judgment, and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
- Flexibility and ability to manage multiple tasks at once.
- Strong ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and provide empathy-driven customer service.
- Comfort working with animals of unknown dispositions, including those with behavioral or medical issues.
- Previous experience in adoption counseling, community outreach, or animal care is preferred but not required.
Schedule & Location:
- Part-time, flexible schedule (weekend and some evening availability required)
- Work Location: Santa Rosa, CA 95407 (must be able to commute reliably or plan to relocate)
Preferred Experience:
- Animal care or pet care experience: 1 year (required)
- Adoption counseling or community outreach: Preferred but not required
- Shift availability: Day and evening shifts available
