Position Snapshot: The EHS Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the company's environmental health and safety programs to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. Reporting directly to the CEO, this role will drive a culture of safety, lead continuous improvement initiatives, and minimize workplace hazards, ensuring the health and safety of all employees while maintaining environmental compliance at all locations.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and maintain EHS policies, programs, and procedures across all production facilities to ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
- Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and assessments to identify and mitigate hazards and risks.
- Collaborate with plant managers and supervisors to ensure safety programs are understood, communicated, and adhered to.
- Manage incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action implementation to prevent recurrence of accidents and near misses.
- Track, report, and analyze EHS performance metrics, identifying opportunities for improvement.
- Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees at all levels, ensuring understanding of policies, PPE use, emergency response, and safe work practices.
- Monitor environmental compliance, including stormwater management, waste disposal, air quality, and spill prevention measures.
- Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies (OSHA, EPA, etc.), managing inspections, reporting, and documentation as required.
- Lead the development of company-wide safety goals, initiatives, and a culture of accountability for EHS performance.
- Oversee workers' compensation claims management, collaborating with HR and insurance providers to reduce claims and return-to-work time.
- Research and stay current on EHS regulations, best practices, and industry trends.
- Coordinate emergency response plans and preparedness drills.
- Ensure all equipment and processes meet EHS standards and advise on necessary safety investments.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Familiar with OSHA 1910 General Industry & 1926 Construction standards.
- Knowledgeable in safe work practices, identifying hazards, and implementing corrective actions.
- Must be able to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, and must be comfortable speaking in front of large groups.
- Working knowledge of injury/incident investigations and processes.
- Excellent organization and time management skills to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality with highly sensitive information.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Qualifications:
- 5-7 years of hands-on experience in the HS&E field in a manufacturing or construction environment.
- OSHA 30 certification or equivalent.
- OHST, ASP, CHST or other certifications a plus.
Requirements:
- Must reside in the continental U.S. within the Mid-Atlantic region or North Carolina.
- Must have a valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and ability to pass a criminal background check.
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S. for any employer.
Typical Schedule: Work is generally performed Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week depending on workload and job demands. This position will require regular travel (3-4 days per week) with overnight stays as needed.
Typical Physical Demands: Physical agility, which may require any or all the following: standing, sitting, walking, climbing, reaching, bending/stooping, lifting (50lbs. max), pushing/pulling (50lbs. max).
Working Conditions: This position is physically demanding and often requires work outdoors with exposure to all types of weather conditions. Work is performed in a production environment with ambient air conditions, loud noise, dangerous equipment, and variable lighting. Dirty and dusty conditions at times which may require respirator protection. Confined spaces also exist which require additional protection measures. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required in all production and loading areas. Office work will be performed in clean, climate-controlled areas with fluorescent lighting.
