Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED).
  • If graduation did not occur within the last two years, one year of recent medical assistant experience working in an applicable setting.
  • Maintains current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers.
  • Primary care prior experience.
  • Must be able to learn and utilize computer software programs.
  • Willing to work beyond normal working hours when necessary.
  • Must possess reasonable ability to communicate in English.
  • Knowledge and ability to carry out rules of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which protects patient rights.
  • This is a Safety Sensitive Position as defined in the Alcohol & Drug Policy.
  • This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing.
  • This is a safety sensitive position and will be subject to pre-employment drug testing and criminal history background check, which will include fingerprinting.
  • Must have employment eligibility in the U.S.
  • Indian preference will be observed in the hiring process.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diploma as a medical administrative assistant from an accredited medical vocational course.
  • Active Medical Assistant certification (CMA), or registration (RMA) or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA).
  • Laboratory experience.
  • Phlebotomy certification.

Summary

Performs assigned tasks of direct and indirect care in the ambulatory setting to meet the care needs of patients under the direct supervision of a physician (medical acts) or assigned supervisor. The medical assistant participates as a member of the health care team and accepts appropriate delegation from the RN or physician in meeting the needs of the patient/family. The medical assistant performs assigned tasks in accordance with the patient care plan, policies and procedures of the organization and principles of relationship-based care. The medical assistant carries out designated activities that are within those functions limited by law to unlicensed health care personnel.

Principal Activities & Responsibilities

  • Greets, screens, schedules, and directs patients to exam rooms.
  • Performs clerical duties related to clinical services including medical transcription, composition, and dictation in a medical group.
  • Prepares and processes correspondence. Answers routine medical administrative inquiries and drafts letters for physicians and other clinical staff.
  • Obtains, verifies, and updates patient information and provides support services to patients and medical staff. Arranging hospital admissions and laboratory services.
  • Preparing and administering medications, including by intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous injections-including vaccinations/immunizations, as directed by a physician or other licensed provider (e.g., a nurse practitioner or physician assistant).
  • Triaging patient phone calls.
  • Requests, locates, sends, and receives patient medical records.
  • Assisting physicians during exams and minor procedures.
  • Performing basic lab tests and EKGs.
  • Preparing and administering medications and immunizations.
  • Maintaining stocks of medicines and medical supplies.
  • Completing physician orders and facilitating specialists' care.
  • Arranges meetings for clinical staff.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and office procedures.
  • Maintain appearance standards as outlined in CTCLUSI policies.
  • Must be able to interact with Tribal members and the general public in a courteous, professional, and efficient manner.
  • Strong critical thinking skills
  • Dedicated to providing the best patient care possible.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of professionalism during stressful times.
  • Provide excellent customer service to clients and vendors of Three Rivers Health Center.
  • Maintain a good attendance record.
  • Other duties as directed by management.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

  • Standard medical equipment and supplies including thermometers and syringes. May involve use of assistive devices such as walkers, wheelchairs, ventilators, pulse oximetry units, and oxygen tanks.
  • Must be able to walk, talk, hear, use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • May be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be willing and able to work long hours, which may include evenings and weekends.
  • Must be willing and able to travel both locally and within the CTCLUSI service delivery area.

WORKING CONDITIONS & ENVIRONMENT

  • Varied activities including standing, walking, reaching, bending, lifting. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient's manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 100 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
  • May be required to work in locations other than Three Rivers Health Center, such as schools or at an outreach work location.
  • May be required to attend meetings, conferences and Tribal events.
