POSITION: Early Head Start Specialist
SALARY: $20.00, per hour
REPORTS TO: ECE Site Supervisor
LOCATION: Headstart, Nespelem, WA
Basic Functions: NON-EXEMPT. The Early Head Start Specialist is responsible for wrap around services accommodating the needs of children aged 0-4 in activities from training in proper eating, playing habits, to developing motor skills. Advancement beyond this position to the Early Childhood career path is possible in two ways, each requiring extended coursework and/or experience in early childhood education or other curriculum/competency exam that satisfies requirements for the position and no child left behind
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Training:
- Requires an Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field AND teaching experience in an early learning setting, (preferred); OR
- CDA for infants and toddlers; AND 24 months teaching experience in an early learning setting.
- OR Possible trainee plan for motivated applicants.
- Must possess, or be able to obtain a First Aid/CPR Certification within thirty (30) days of employment.
- Must possess, or be able to obtain a Food Handler’s permit, TB Test, and Health Clearance within ten (10) days of employment.
- Possess and maintain a valid State Driver’s License and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance (preferred).
- Must successfully clear an extensive Criminal History Background Inquiry that indicates no conviction(s) of crimes involving a child or other serious offenses. Continued employment is contingent upon clearance on an on-going basis.
- Must have maintained a substance free lifestyle for the last year (1) and continue maintaining this lifestyle during employment, and be willing to sign and adhere to the Tribes Substance Abuse Policy and the Head Start’s Healthy Lifestyle Policy in addition to submitting to program testing procedures.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires Knowledge and understanding of Early Childhood Education practices and developmental milestones.
- Employee must be mentally healthy to meet the needs of birth to three aged children and their families.
- Nine (9) months experience in interpreting and developing and implementing curriculum and education plans in a classroom setting.
- Nine (9) months experience in recognizing that children have individual rates of development as well as individual interest, temperaments, languages, cultural backgrounds and learning styles.
- Nine (9) months experience in interpreting and in the facilitation and implementation of observation, child’s outcomes, assessments and individualization of children
- Ability to work with birth to three aged children and children with disabilities.
- Ability and willingness to work overtime hours as needed for parent activities.
- Demonstrated ability to speak publicly, and communicate in writing and oral form.
- Must be able to speak in public.
Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.

If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
