A Brief Overview Under the general supervision of the Lead and Supervisor : perform outpatient phlebotomy, process laboratory specimens, data entry, and specimen transport as ordered by the respective physicians. Must exhibit the ability to work independently and provide customer service using CHOP ICARE values and Service Standards.The percentage of allocation for Phlebotomy and Central Lab Services job responsibilities is determined by lab leadership.What you will doPhlebotomy - OutpatientIdentify patient as per established proceduresReview orders in the hospital information system and laboratory information system and release ordersPerform venipuncture and capillary phlebotomy following established proceduresCorrectly label specimens and verify patient identityCentral Lab Services - Specimen ProcessingAssess specimen requirements and specimen integrityTriage, accession, process, and deliver specimens following established proceduresStore specimens according to laboratory-specific storage directives as neededCustomer ServiceFace-to-faceGuided by CHOP ICARE Values and Service StandardsInterfacing with patients, laboratory staff, medical staff, medical courier, and vendorsProvide a patient-centric collaborative experienceDiffuse anger or frustration, aim to provide solutionsAnswer questions and provide supportPhoneProper phone etiquette following established proceduresEnsure a warm tone of voiceDiffuse anger or frustration, aim to provide solutionsAnswer question and provide supportCall critical lab values to clinicianSpecimen handlingTreat each specimen as a personExhaust all options when problem-solving to avoid re-collectionEquipment maintenanceMaintain and clean medical laboratory equipment (e.g. centrifuges, vortex, refrigerator, freezers)Limited messenger service as requiredPromptly delivers specimens or paperwork throughout the health care campus as required.Promptly activates and executes the pneumatic tube downtime procedures as requiredIs knowledgeable in the use of resources to identify transport temperatures for all specimens and ensure stabilitySchedulingMust be flexible in scheduling and cooperation in performing all assigned tasksResponsible for working rotating on-call, weekends, and holidaysPerforms other duties as assigned by the Phlebotomy and Central Lab Services leadership teamEducation QualificationsHigh School Diploma / GED RequiredTechnical Diploma Phlebotomy PreferredExperience Qualificationsscientific laboratory PreferredSkills and AbilitiesKnowledge : basic biology, basic chemistry, English language, customer service, public safety and securityTechnology skills : electronic mail, Microsoft Office applications, typing, internet software, Microsoft WindowsOther skills : active listening, reading comprehension, critical thinking, speaking, complex problem solving, monitoring, time management, writing, active learning, coordination, judgment and decision making, service orientation, social perceptiveness.Abilities : oral expression, near vision, manual dexterity, perceptual speed, information ordering, problem sensitivity, oral comprehension, finger dexterity, written comprehension, arm-hand steadiness, deductive reasoning, selective attention, speech clarity, speech recognition, visual color discrimination, writing expression, number facilityLicenses and CertificationsMedical Laboratory Technician (MLT) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) - upon hire - Preferred orCertified Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) - ASCP - The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) - upon hire - Preferred
