The Maintenance Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of fleet maintenance, ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of the company’s semi-trucks, trailers, and associated equipment. This role requires strong technical expertise in diesel engines and fleet management, leadership skills to manage and develop a team, and a commitment to maintaining compliance with safety regulations and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Safety and Compliance
- Develop, implement, and enforce safety protocols and shop regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
- Conduct regular safety audits and maintain compliance with all local, state, and federal rules governing fleet maintenance and repairs.
- Provide ongoing safety training for shop staff and ensure adherence to established guidelines.
2. Fleet Maintenance and Repairs
- Oversee the maintenance and repair of all vehicles and equipment across multiple company locations, ensuring minimal downtime and maximum reliability.
- Manage a preventative maintenance program aligned with manufacturers’ specifications to reduce costs and increase fleet efficiency.
- Ensure all maintenance activities are properly documented and maintain accurate records for audits, inspections, and performance tracking.
3. Technical Leadership and Expertise
- Provide hands-on guidance for diagnosing and repairing complex issues with diesel engines, transmissions, braking systems, and other components.
- Stay current with advancements in technology, regulations, and best practices to continuously improve fleet reliability and operational efficiency.
- Conduct technical evaluations of maintenance staff and provide coaching to enhance their skill sets.
4. Team Management and Development
- Recruit, train, and supervise shop staff, including diesel mechanics and support personnel.
- Establish clear performance expectations, provide regular feedback, and conduct evaluations to support team growth.
- Implement and maintain a comprehensive training and certification program to develop technical skills and ensure high performance.
5. Operational Oversight
- Assist in the development and management of the maintenance budget, ensuring cost-effective use of resources.
- Maintain inventory of parts, tools, and equipment, ensuring availability for scheduled and emergency repairs.
- Review and analyze maintenance reports to identify trends, address inefficiencies, and recommend improvements.
- Coordinate maintenance activities with other departments to prioritize vehicle repairs and minimize disruptions to operations.
6. Facility and Equipment Management
- Ensure the shop and surrounding areas are clean, organized, and free from safety hazards.
- Oversee the proper use, maintenance, and storage of tools, diagnostic equipment, and other resources.
- Monitor compliance with environmental regulations and proper handling of hazardous materials.
7. Technology and Systems Management
- Utilize maintenance software and tools for scheduling, tracking, and reporting activities; familiarity with McLeod or similar systems is preferred.
- Leverage Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook for record-keeping and communication.
- Use web-based tools to develop training materials, research industry updates, and ensure compliance with regulations.
8. Warranties and Claims
- Manage manufacturer warranties and coordinate insurance claims related to repairs and maintenance.
- Work with vendors and suppliers to negotiate pricing and ensure timely delivery of parts and services.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred but not required with relevant experience.
Experience:
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in fleet maintenance and management, with hands-on expertise in diesel engines and heavy-duty truck systems.
