Toxicology General Supervisor – Pittsburgh, PA
- Role and Responsibilities:Responsible for providing day-to-day supervision of high complexity test performance by testing personnel.
- Accessible to testing personnel at all times testing is performed in order to provide on-site, telephone or electronic consultation to resolve technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures established either by the laboratory director or technical supervisor.
- Monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
- Ensure that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
- Perform method validations to assess accuracy, precision, linearity, and other required metrics; ensure laboratory personnel perform tests adhering to approved procedures.
- Submit proficiency test evaluations to accrediting agencies by established deadlines; review evaluations, complete investigations within designated timeframes, and approve corrective action plans as necessary
- Ensure analytical test systems maintain acceptable performance levels by implementing corrective and remedial actions when systems fail; report patient test results only when systems function properly, and ensure reports include all required elements.
- Review quality control (QC) data and maintenance logs at established intervals in accordance with protocols.
- Support staff during testing hours by being available to provide guidance and resolve issues.
- Approve and maintain procedure manuals by ensuring accessibility, conducting annual reviews, and verifying that all information is current and reflective of best practices.
- Run and submit PT surveys and linearity assessments
- Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for department.
- Develop and oversee daily, weekly, and monthly department responsibilities and goals.
- Verify personnel qualifications and training by ensuring all staff meet required education and experience standards, receive appropriate documented training, and identifying needs for remedial training or continuing education as necessary.
- Conduct Competency Evaluations on a need-be basis for department staff.
- Provide guidance to department staff members and collaborate with HR when needed in matters concerning but not limited to: compliance with company policy/procedure, progressive discipline
- Create and manage weekly employee schedules for department monitoring time keeping aspects for department staff including but not limited to: timecards, requests off, scheduling discrepancies
- Coordinate with HR to utilize recruiting platforms such as Indeed and Glassdoor in order to attract and screen candidates for open positions.
- Education and Experience:BS or master’s degree in clinical laboratory science, medical technology or chemical, physical or biological science and 4 years training and experience in high-complexity testing
- 6-8 years minimum of high-complexity laboratory experience. 4 years minimum of supervisor experience and qualified as General Supervisor under CLIA and accreditation agencies to perform high complexity testing. 4 years of LCMSMS experience specifically sample prep, extraction, instrument maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting
- Toxicology required skills: supervising personnel and proficiency in performing lab tests with different body fluid types for toxicology testing, specimen collection and handling, QC procedures, operation of toxicology lab equipment, data analysis, ability to operation and troubleshoot technical issues across testing platforms
- Leadership and organizational skills, managing staff and supplies, generating schedules, workflow management
