Purpose:
The JBRPC AmeriCorps Program supports 10,000 acres of public parks and recreational areas in Jamaica Bay and the Rockaways, with a mission to foster environmental stewardship and expand equitable access to outdoor spaces. Designed to serve underserved communities, the program emphasizes education, community engagement, and sustainable development, guided by principles of inclusivity, service, and capacity building.
In this AmeriCorps Position, the member will develop and coordinate education and public programs, support community outreach efforts, and assist with grant identification and reporting. By building partnerships and strengthening JBRPC’s impact, the member will help create long-term solutions that enhance community well-being and access to local parks.
The AmeriCorps VISTA member will build capacity and develop sustainable solutions to alleviate poverty in underserved communities.
Description of Duties:
Join JBRPC to help expand environmental education, community engagement, and volunteer programming across the Jamaica Bay and Rockaway parklands!
Key Duties:
- Coordinate and facilitate environmental education field trips for Title 1 schools and underserved communities.
- Support development of local ecology and service-learning curricula.
- Assist with JBRPC’s youth workforce development initiatives focused on green jobs.
- Research and support grant writing and reporting efforts for education and community programs.
- Plan and support volunteer stewardship events and public programs.
- Co-develop and implement community programs like Park Pals and Rockaway Refresh.
This position supports environmental equity by connecting historically underserved communities to green spaces, education, and career pathways.
Qualifications:
- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
- At least 18 years of age
- College Graduate
- Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check
Physical Requirements:

Time Requirements:
- Typically, this position is expected to serve full-time (35-40 hours) from 6/02/25 to 6/01/26, but exact schedules may vary.
- Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
Orientation and Training:
- Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
- Member will receive a Virtual Member Orientation (VMO) from VISTA on their first day of service.

Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps VISTA member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed their required year of service; the member has satisfactorily completed assignments; and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets, accomplishment tracking, and quarterly reporting.
