Job Title: Metal Mechanic
Job Summary
The Industrial Sheet Metal Mechanic works with a variety of metals (often stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and other alloys) to create, assemble, and install sheet metal products used in industrial settings. This role involves using specialized tools and techniques to cut, shape, assemble, and install metal components for systems such as HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), piping, roofing, and structural components.
Key Responsibilities
- Fabrication and Assembly: Cut, shape, and assemble sheet metal parts and components according to blueprints, drawings, or verbal instructions.
- Installation: Install fabricated sheet metal products such as HVAC ductwork, vent systems, roof panels, metal facades, or other structural elements.
- Welding and Soldering: Use welding, brazing, or soldering techniques to join metal components together where needed.
- Tool Operation: Operate machines like shears, brake presses, roll formers, and CNC machines to shape and cut metal.
- Measurement and Layout: Accurately measure and layout workpieces using rulers, tape measures, calipers, and other tools to ensure precise cuts and fitment.
- Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and repairs on sheet metal systems and components.
- Inspection and Quality Control: Inspect finished products to ensure they meet specifications, codes, and safety standards.
- Collaboration: Work closely with other tradespeople, such as welders, engineers, and contractors, to ensure proper installation and functionality of systems.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety regulations and protocols while operating equipment, handling materials, and working in hazardous environments.
Experience Requirements
- Typically, 2-3 years of experience in sheet metal work, including fabrication, installation, and maintenance of industrial systems.
Skills and Certifications
- OSHA 10 required
Work Environment
- Mainly outdoors and on industrial job sites, which may include exposure to weather conditions (rain, heat, cold). Work is often conducted at height, requiring strict safety precautions.
- Potential exposure to hazardous materials, loud noises, extreme temperatures, etc.
- Protective Equipment: Hard hat, leather gloves, steel toe boots, and goggles provided by the company are the basic PPE. When working at heights, harness and self-retracting lifelines are also required.
