The Contra Costa County Probation Department is seeking qualified individuals to fill vacancies for the position of Deputy Probation Officer II. This is an excellent career opportunity for individuals who would like to expand their qualifying experience into Probation field services. This class represents the journey level in the probation series. Initial assignment may be in East, West or Central Contra Costa County working in either the adult or the juvenile division performing various departmental functions, such as intake, investigations, supervision, juvenile placement, specialized services, or court support. Deputies perform a full range of Probation duties; including supervising a caseload of juvenile and / or adult clients, counseling clients, investigating complex cases, writing pre-sentence / dispositional reports and performing related work as required.
The ideal candidate will have the ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with a variety of individuals; apply sound judgment and determine truth of statements. In addition, the candidate will have knowledge of the principles of adult and juvenile probation, social casework, have an understanding of the court procedures; federal, state, and local laws and ordinances affecting adult and juvenile probation work, principles and findings of applied psychology, and interviewing and counseling techniques.

Minimum Qualifications
License Required : Candidates must possess and maintain throughout the duration of employment a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. An out of state valid motor vehicle operator's license will be accepted during the application process.
Education : Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience : Either 1) One (1) year of full-time (or the equivalent of full-time) professional experience as a Deputy Probation Officer or Parole Officer or 2) Two (2) years of full-time (or the equivalent of full-time) experience in a California County Probation Department at a level equivalent to Institutional Supervisor I in Contra Costa County.
Age : Must be at least 21 years of age.
Physical Requirements : Ability to meet such health standards as may be prescribed by the County Medical Consultant. This will include a physical agility test and / or a functional capacity evaluation pursuant to Government Code section 1031.
Background : Successful completion of a thorough background investigation, including psychological testing, as specified in Section 1031 of the California Government Code, and shall not have been convicted of a felony in this or any other state or in a federal jurisdiction, or of any offense in any other state or in any other federal jurisdiction which would have been a felony if committed in this state.
Arming : Some assignments within the Probation Department require the willingness and capability to be armed with a firearm. Authorization to carry a firearm while on duty requires a psychological examination confirming fitness to be armed and the successful completion of a firearm training course.
Training : Appointee to this class must successfully complete a Probation Officer Basic Course of Instruction required under Section 6035 of the California Penal Code within (1) one year from date of hire, as well as Peace Officer training pursuant to section 832 of the Penal Code within (1) one year from date of hire, or if the appointee had previously completed these courses they may provide a certificate of completion from a certified program that fulfills standards established by the Correction Standard Authority and Peace Officer Standard and Training(POST).
Promotional Status : Applicants must have probationary or regular permanent status in the County service on the final filing date in order to participate in this examination as a promotional candidate.

The BSCC will take place in person, in Martinez, CA. Candidates will be required to participate in the BSCC and achieve a passing score to advance in the recruitment process.
The interview is tentatively scheduled to take place online. The interview will likely be administered remotely using a computer or mobile device such as a tablet. You will need access to a reliable internet connection to take the assessment, as well as computer or mobile device with a camera.
The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.
