Position Description: The Immigration Law Clerk is responsible for conducting legal research, drafting legal documents, and providing support to the firm’s clients and legal team. This role plays a crucial role in providing service and support to clients of the firm and acts as a guide in navigating the complex legal system.
As an Immigration Law Clerk, the candidate will be responsible for the following duties:
· Legal Research:
o Conduct in-depth legal research to analyze laws, court decisions, documents,
opinions, briefs, or other information related to cases before the court.
· Document Preparation:
o Prepare legal memoranda, or statements of issues involved in cases, including
appropriate suggestions or recommendations.
· Drafting and reviewing of cases:
o Draft and review proposed judicial decisions, under the guidance and direction of a practicing lawyer.
o Review petitions, motions, or pleadings that have been filed to determine issues
involved or the basis for relief.
o Draft or proofread judicial opinions, decisions, or citations.
· Communication:
o Confer with staff about documents, record of proceeding, status of motions or the status of order granting.
o Respond to questions from judicial officers or court staff on general legal issues.
· Legal Updates:
o Research laws, court decisions, documents, opinions, briefs, or other information related to cases before the court.
o Keep abreast of changes in the law and inform judges when cases are affected by such changes.
· Court Participation:
o Attend court sessions to hear oral arguments, record necessary case information,
and provide support as needed.
o Must also communicate with court staff to discuss the status of pending decisions, record of proceedings, or the timing of filings.
· Case Management:
o Review current dockets of pending cases before the courts to ensure adequate
progress and communicate with counsel regarding case management or procedural requirements.
o Review complaints, petitions, motions, or pleadings that have been filed to determine issues involved or basis for relief.
· Information Management:
o Enter relevant information into calendars, filing systems, or case management
systems.
o Verify that all files, complaints, or other papers are available and in the proper order.
o Compile court-related statistics.
NOTE: This is an entry-level, legal clerk position and is not a licensed lawyer position. As
such, there is no licensure requirement. Further, this position does not provide representation of clients and does not provide legal advice.
Education/Experience Preferred: Our Immigration Law Clerk position requires a bachelor’s degree or an individual with at least a professional-level degree or the equivalent in a specialty field, including a Master of Laws, plus several years of related experience.
Physical Demands: Position involves sitting for extended periods of time at the employee’s workstation and during meetings. Employees need to be able to lift up to 20 pounds as frequently as needed to move objects; dexterity to write and manipulate computer keyboard and mouse; ability to hear and speak clearly; and ability to distinguish between colors on graphs and charts.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: This is an in-person, part-time position requiring 20-30 hours per week. Hours are flexible around your school schedule and must be communicated per semester. The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Travel: Some travel is a requirement of the job. The employee must be able to drive and have an available personal automobile and/or be able to effectively use public transportation.
