Job Summary

Under the supervision of the District Maintenance Supervisor, performs non-routine and complex engineering assignments. Responsible for elements of an entire project of relatively limited scope, or a portion of a larger diverse project that may involve planning, design, construction, and/or maintenance. Performs or directs various traffic control coordination, various field surveys/investigations, preparation of plan details, inspections, measurements, and/or calculations. Supervises and assigns subordinate employees to specific tasks and functions. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) certification is required.
  • Four (4) years of full- time work experience supervising, operating, or maintaining highways and their appurtenances, such as pavement, drainage systems, bridges, and landscaping within roadway jurisdiction, which includes three (3) years of full-time work experience as a Laborer or Motor Vehicle Driver (Road Repairman); OR two (2) years full-time work experience in a supervisory or crew leader/foreman role is required.
  • Experience in snow and ice roadway removal operations is required.
  • Valid driver’s license and proof of insurance is required.

This position is considered a safety-sensitive position. Candidates who are selected to fill safety-sensitive positions must pass a required drug test as part of the pre-employment background check process.

  • Degrees awarded outside of the United States with the exception of those awarded in one of the United States territories and Canada, must be credentialed by the World Education Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) or a National Association of Credential Evaluation (NACES) member organization.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Other Characteristics

  • Knowledge of State Standards and Specifications for Road and Bridge Maintenance and/or procedures.
  • Knowledge of Cook County Highway Road systems. Knowledge of proper documentation procedures.
  • Advanced skills in engineering principles, practices and techniques and the use of engineering tools and devices.
  • Ability to work and communicate well with others, both in written and oral form.
  • Ability to interpret technical information related to engineering and construction projects.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relations.
  • Ability to supervise subordinate employees.
  • Ability to work outdoors in possible adverse weather conditions.
  • Skill and judgment to devise approaches to accomplish work, solve design and operational problems, and make decisions or recommendations where standard procedures and techniques may not be applicable.
  • Ability to independently plan and execute projects or studies of a broad scope and complexity, or serve in a highly specialized capacity.
  • Ability to work throughout Cook County and adjacent areas.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in developing solutions to problems and in situations where limited standardization exists.

Physical Requirements

Medium Work involves exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently or an amount greater than negligible and up to 10 pounds constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
