Job Summary
The Master Instructor serves as a subject matter expert and leader in the design, delivery, and evaluation of nursing education and professional development programs across the Cook County Health (CCH). This role is pivotal in ensuring clinical excellence and professional growth for nursing staff through innovative educational strategies and mentorship. Collaborates in addition to all nursing related roles, provides additional resource support to advance practice prepared nurses. Conducts classes, performs evidence synthesis, literature searches, provides guidance and mentorship to staff. Responsible for project management, student placement, and graduate student placement and preceptorship. Leads process and coordinates programs to obtain continuing education certificates for nursing education and ensures that CCH maintains accreditation for issuing nursing continuing education. Reviews continuing education submissions and chairs the nursing continuing education planning committee. Functions as a resource and internal consultant for nursing and allied health personnel as necessary.

Typical Duties
  • Conducts educational needs, plans educational activities, implements education plans, and evaluates educational offerings to ensure that knowledge acquisition has occurred.
  • Develops continuing education programs, in-services, and trainings to enhance the professional development of staff, implement new products, improve patient outcomes, or to meet organizational initiatives.
  • Assist with the overall planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of education programs of the system.
  • Develops nursing education programs to achieve the goals and objectives of CCH.
  • Collaborates with inter- and intradepartmental CCH administrative staff to enhance educational programs
  • Participates and conducts individual and group education and creates programs for inpatients and outpatients.
  • Evaluates the adequacy of educational resources and products relative to defined goals as needed.
  • Conducts classes in specialty that demonstrates competency utilizing age-appropriate teaching/learning principles.
  • Leads the needs assessment, design, implementation, and evaluation of system-wide nursing orientation, in-service education, and continuing education programs.
  • Develops and delivers engaging educational programs utilizing diverse teaching methodologies (e.g., simulation, online learning, case studies) and adult learning principles.
  • Incorporates current research, best practices, and regulatory requirements into curriculum development.
  • Evaluates program effectiveness and makes data-driven improvements to optimize learning outcomes.
  • Functions as an internal consultant, a resource for evidence-based practice, and a champion for continuous quality improvement in nursing education.
  • Functions as an advance prepared nursing education instructor and expert resource for the nursing department.
  • Provides expert mentorship and clinical guidance to nursing staff at all levels.
  • Serves as a preceptor and role model for new and experienced nurses.
  • Collaborates with nurse managers and clinical leaders to ensure competency-based orientation and ongoing professional development.
  • Contributes to the development of competency assessment tools and performance evaluation processes.
  • Observes and evaluates staff performance in actual or classroom settings to assure staff competence.
  • Conducts staff in-services on clinical equipment and new procedures and standards
  • Assists with patient and community education programs, as needed.
  • Communicates all pertinent information including recommendations to the supervisor.
  • Leads the process for obtaining and maintaining continuing education (CE) accreditation for CCH.
  • Manages CE program submissions, record-keeping, and annual reporting requirements.
  • Provides expert guidance and leadership for the nursing continuing education planning, through but not limited to committee related work.
  • Stays abreast of accreditation standards and best practices in continuing nursing education.
  • May function as “Affiliate Coordinator for affiliate organizations completing clinical rotations at CCH. Manages affiliate contracts, ensures compliance with requirements, and coordinates clinical placements, orientations, and computer training for affiliate students and instructors.
  • Oversees student prerequisite record maintenance (immunizations, BLS, background checks, etc.) and ensure they are current.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams and stakeholders across the CCH to integrate educational initiatives with organizational goals and quality improvement efforts.
  • Participates in relevant committees and contributes to the development of nursing standards of care, policies, and procedures.
  • Coordinates the planning and implementation of special programs utilizing outside agencies.
  • Incorporates research outcomes to ensure high quality and optimal educational programs.
  • Utilizes a quality improvement monitoring process to promote changes that enhance educational and performance outcomes.
  • Participates in departmental activities to enhance the overall performance of personnel, including appropriate documentation.
  • Maintains electronic educational file for employees as required by the hospital policy.
  • Assists with The Joint Commission and other regulatory survey readiness and corrective actions, as needed.
  • Identifies and initiates and/or substantively contributes to educational programming applying Assists with Quality Process Improvement and patient safety principles.
  • Assists with the development of standards of care, policies and procedures, as needed.
  • Participates in the Information System implementation program and education activities to promote staff competency with same.
  • Maintains department records and reports, including accurate attendance of participants for all meetings.
  • Assists with nurses gaining and maintaining certification to promote clinical competency of nursing personnel.
  • Conducts classes in specialty that demonstrate competency utilizing age-appropriate teaching/learning principles.
  • Collaborates with nurse managers and nurse clinicians to provide clinical orientation as needed.
  • Observes and evaluates staff performance in actual or classroom settings to assure staff competency.
  • Maintains professional competence by keeping abreast of changes in nursing practice, concepts, teaching modalities, and new trends.
  • Maintains membership in professional organization.
  • Maintains CPR instruction certification.
  • Obtains/maintains professional certification in appropriate area or specialty.
  • Attends seminars and workshops in appropriate area or specialty
  • Maintains current knowledge about JCAHO standards, IDPH guidelines, nurse practice acts and new trends in education.
  • Collaborates with other disciplines/area personnel (i.e., nursing students and instructors) as needed to implement educational activities.
  • Reviews and evaluate contracts, schedules as necessary to regulate educational activities.
  • Collaborates with other disciplines to provide clinical practice for affiliated schools.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Current license as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Illinois
  • Master’s degree in Nursing or Education from an accredited college or university
  • Five (5) years of experience in nursing; two (2) in acute care setting and three (3) in teaching
  • This position may need to recognize the needs and behavior of specific age groups of patients treated to provide in-service training
  • Obtains ANCC certification in area of specialty within one (1) year of starting employment and maintaining certification throughout employment
  • Must be able to work flexible and/or irregular hours to complete system initiatives
  • Must be able to travel to all CCH affiliates on an as needed basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing or related field from an accredited college or university OR actively enrolled to complete a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Nursing or related field from an accredited college or university within two years of starting employment
  • Master of Science in Education from an accredited college or university
  • Previous clinical program or nursing related management experience
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification

Physical and Environmental Demands
This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide policy and departmental procedures.
