Job Summary:
As the Sr. Director of R&D Digital Innovation, you will report directly to the VP of R&D with responsibilities pertaining to new software development initiatives and digital innovations. This includes full ownership and oversight of the incubation of CooperSurgical’s future digital offerings in conjunction to our overall portfolio and products ecosystem including equipment, instruments, and services.
Sr. Director of R&D Digital Innovation is expected to define and build adequate digital innovation capabilities able to meet CooperSurgical’s business objectives and future growth aspirations in an integrated digital space. It is also expected to be the key co-owner of our digital innovation strategy (in collaboration with the Strategy Team, IT and Commercial Operations). This implies the leading role in defining a comprehensive CooperSurgical digital ecosystem to maximize our business growth potential by leveraging synergies among different product and service offerings as well as developing new digital value drivers.
The Sr. Director of R&D Digital Innovation is expected to closely collaborate with commercial operations and corresponding product managers to define adequate approaches for identifying, scoping, and driving monetization of CooperSurgical’s future digital offerings. In addition, the leader in this role will be responsible for driving technical rigor, best practices as well as deployment of state-of-the-art technologies in line with the industry trends including data science and Artificial Intelligence.

- Define and build R&D Digital Innovation capabilities able of meeting CooperSurgical’s business needs relative to the definition, development and monetization of digital product and service offerings.
- Establish functional excellence and best practices by driving technical rigor, process discipline and agile incubation methodologies for improvement of existing and creation of new digital business offerings.
- Co-develop and continuously refine CooperSurgical’s digital innovation strategy (securing buy-in from senior leaders and cross-functional stakeholders) in close collaboration with the Strategy Team, Commercial Operations & Businesses and IT.
- Partner with commercial leaders Worldwide to shape, optimize and drive strategic portfolio management of our digital solutions and services.
- Develop and own digital offerings roadmap in line with the digital innovation strategy and individual software value stream needs.
- Ensure that software development best practices, standards, architectural and security considerations are fully aligned and synchronized with internal IT partners and external guidelines and policies (global scope).
- Own and drive planning and execution of all digital innovation commitments, on-time and on-budget.
- Drive an effective collaboration with other R&D teams including Software and Hardware Product Development and Engineering, Life Sciences as well as related cross-functional teams to ensure an adequate resource and capability utilization and software-hardware integration, as applicable.
- Define, select, and build relationships with external software development partners in synergy with the internal team capacity and capability needs.
- Drive world-wide software development compliance by ensuring that all applicable security, quality and regulatory guidelines and policies are followed to develop secure, safe and effective software-based business offerings across all geographical regions.
- Lead, oversee and/or contribute to milestones and other project or program reviews. Represent R&D in cross-functional reviews and meetings. Effectively communicate with business stakeholders at all levels.
- Assess technologies and intellectual properties of competitive products and/or acquisition targets in support of business growth strategies and related due diligence activities.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Track record of successfully incubating and developing new digital product or service offerings that resulted in profitable opportunity monetization.
- Experience with Distributed Software Systems for complex large system applications.
- Experience and proficiency in developing digital ecosystem strategies on an enterprise scale and corresponding technology roadmaps.
- Experience in both SaaS and SaaP software solutions and their implementation in medical device or related fields.
- An outcome focused mindset including process discipline and drive for timely project completion. Drive for standardization & best practices with ability to work in agile methodology framework.
- Excellent interpersonal and effective communication skills with internal and external stakeholders ranging from project engineers, vendors and consultants to key opinion leaders and executives.
- Occasional domestic and international travel (: 10%)
- Office work setting
- Minimum of 15 years (B.S.), 12 years (M.S) or 10 years (PhD) experience with incubation, product or business development related to software and digital offerings.
- Minimum of 7 years of people management responsibility
- Minimum BS, however, strongly preferred is advanced engineering degree (MS or PhD level) in combination with the digital domain knowledge, education, or experience.
