Job Description
Copeland’s Excavating & Utilities is seeking a qualified Underground Utility Worker to assist in the installation of pipes, conduit, and related infrastructure across various excavation projects. The ideal candidate has experience with underground utility work, is comfortable working outdoors in varying conditions, and is dedicated to maintaining a safe and efficient work environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Pipe & Conduit Installation
- Work with heavy equipment operators to excavate, backfill, and grade trenches.
- Properly install water, sewer, and other underground utility piping as well as conduit for electrical and communication lines.
- Ensure all pipelines and conduits are sealed, sloped correctly, and free of debris or obstructions.
- Safety & Compliance
- Adhere to OSHA guidelines and company safety standards, including the use of proper trench safety methods and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Identify and report potential hazards promptly to supervisors and team leads.
- Equipment & Tool Handling
- Operate hand and power tools for cutting, aligning, and securing pipe or conduit.
- Coordinate with equipment operators to confirm excavation depths and project specifications.
- Inspect and maintain equipment; report any malfunctioning tools or machinery immediately.
- Site Maintenance
- Keep the job site tidy and safe, removing debris and organizing materials.
- Backfill and compact trenches once installations are complete, ensuring proper stabilization.
- Assist with loading and unloading materials and supplies from trucks or trailers.
- Team Collaboration
- Communicate effectively with foremen, project managers, and co-workers to maintain workflow and meet project deadlines.
- Provide progress updates and relay issues or challenges as they arise.
- Take on additional tasks as needed to support team objectives.
Qualifications
- Experience & Knowledge
- 1–2 years of experience with underground utility work (pipe laying, conduit installation) or a closely related field preferred.
- Basic understanding of reading grade stakes, blueprints, or construction drawings.
- Familiarity with trenching, excavation, and relevant safety regulations.
- Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Comfortable standing, bending, and kneeling for extended periods in outdoor environments.

- Reliable, punctual, and able to work cohesively in a team.
- Detail-oriented and committed to following safety protocols.
- Licenses & Certifications
- Valid driver’s license with a clean record is required; a CDL is advantageous but not required.
- OSHA 10/30 or other relevant safety certifications are a plus but not mandatory.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $15.00 - $17.58 per hour
Expected hours: 40 – 50 per week

Education:
- High school or equivalent (Preferred)
