Description

SUMMARY

Responsible for the agricultural grant tasks to plan and maintain CRNA’s community gardens, located on CRNA property at the end of Copperville Road. Plant, support, and harvest foods and medicines from the community garden and make them available for distribution to the Copper Basin Resource Council (CBRC) Food Bank.  This position may transition into a full-time position depending on available grant funding.

 

JOB DUTIES

  • Develop seasonal plans, workshops, and production goals.
  • Instruct youth and community in the proper care of gardens
  • Instruct youth in the hope of producing value-added products from garden materials.
  • Conduct outreach for community gardens and other grant-funded services.
  • Research materials and supplies to grow the Community Garden according to the grant budget and partner resources.
    • NRCS- High tunnel EQUIP program
  • Recruit and coordinate volunteers
  • Partner with the 477 program, Copper River Watershed Project, Cooperative Extension Services, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Rural Cap, Intertribal Agriculture Council, AK Food Policy Council, CBRC Food Bank, Copper River School District, etc.
  • Coordinate activities for the community gardens and Youth employees.
  • Begin and maintain the Community Garden Composting Project.
  • Organize fundraising events to cover expenses outside the grant funding.
  • Complete required weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
  • Maintain files and correspondence in a confidential and organized manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding clients, staff, and program matters.
  • Attend meetings, training, and workshops as required to enhance and improve job knowledge and performance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY

  • Strong understanding and sensitivity to Alaska Native culture and lifestyle, with demonstrated experience working effectively with the Alaska Native population.
  • Strong written, analytical, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with sensitivity to the lifestyles of targeted participants.
  • Skills in operating a personal computer using a variety of computer software.
  • Ability to keep accurate records and produce timely and accurate written reports.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality as required for HIPAA, other regulations, and organization matters.
  • Ability to learn and apply program/agency operating policies and procedures.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships, including outside contacts.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with teams.

  • Proficient knowledge of agricultural activities including gardening and animal husbandry.
  • Ability to work well with young people.
  • Willingness to volunteer extra time to become involved as a 4-H leader.

 

Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience)

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Driver’s license

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience)

  • Master Gardener
  • Permaculture Design Certificate
  • Husbandry

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that an employee must meet to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. 

 

The work is generally sedentary, requiring routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items weighing less than 50 lbs.  The majority of work is performed in an office setting with a wide variety of people with differing functions, personalities, and abilities.  The office is a non-smoking facility.  May require local travel between compact services of CRNA which may involve exposure to extreme weather conditions.  Works in an environment where the protection of client confidentiality is essential.  Personal Protective Equipment will be provided where/when needed.

 

SPECIFICATIONS

Supervision Received:

Work will be monitored through meetings, reports, and regular communication with the immediate supervisor.  General guidelines for operations are based on program requirements, conditions of grant award(s), and the general policies and procedures of CRNA. 

 

Supervision Exercised:

The position will not provide direct supervision.

 

Contacts:

Contacts include and are not limited to volunteers, organizational staff, clients, and outside agencies.

 

CONDITIONS OF HIRE

  • All employment at CRNA is "at will."  This means that the employee or CRNA may terminate employment at any time and for any reason.  Unless specified in writing, no term of employment is expressed or implied for this position.
  • CRNA is a no-tolerance workplace.  All employees must pass an initial and random drug and alcohol screening to be eligible for and maintain employment.
  • CRNA has several positions that require a criminal background check for the safety of our clients.  All employment offers in the "covered" classification are conditional until CRNA has received a Federal criminal background check verifying eligibility to work in these programs.
  • First Aide/CPR certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire for required positions.
  • As applicable by position and company policy, must meet standards for fitness for duty, immunizations, credentialing, and privileging.
