JOB SUMMARY:
Coppin Academy High School, a public charter high school located on the campus of Coppin State University one of Maryland’s historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) seeks a Principal committed to fostering academic excellence, student achievement, and community engagement. The Principal will serve as an instructional leader dedicated to improving student outcomes, supporting and supervising instructional and school support staff, and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure the success of all students.
As an HBCU-affiliated high school, Coppin Academy seeks a leader who understands the significance of HBCUs in shaping educational excellence and is passionate about serving and uplifting historically underserved student populations. The ideal candidate will have a heart for people, a deep commitment to equity, and a strong vision for student success.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Leading Teacher Learning & Development:
Develops and implements a curriculum, instruction, and assessment system aligned with Coppin Academy’s mission and values.
Sets rigorous academic expectations and measurable benchmarks that support student success.
Uses multiple data-based indicators to assess and drive instructional improvement.
Conducts regular observations and provides actionable feedback to teachers.
Builds instructional and pedagogical capacity among school staff.
Promotes the use of technology to enhance teaching and learning.
Engages in ongoing professional development and models personal growth goals.
Leads the development and implementation of the schools performance plan.
Managing Talent:
Selects and retains high-quality staff committed to student achievement and well-being.
Develops leadership capacity among staff and employs a distributive leadership approach.
Uses data to inform staffing decisions and assess performance.
Creating and Sustaining Conditions for Learning that Focuses on Instruction and Equity:
Develops and implements a clear vision and mission that fosters a positive learning environment.
Engages stakeholders in articulating and understanding school goals.
Promotes cultural proficiency, equity, and inclusivity in all aspects of school operations.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters degree in education or a related field from an accredited institution.
Maryland Advanced Professional Certificate with Principal/Superintendent or Administrator I & II endorsement.
At least five years of leadership experience (teacher leadership roles included) OR completion of a principal preparation program such as City Schools Principal Residency or Emerging Leaders.
At least one year of supervisory/managerial/evaluator experience.
Demonstrated ability to implement culturally responsive pedagogy.
Track record of improving student achievement through leadership.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and education technology tools.
