Position Description:
CENTRAL PROCESSING TECHNICIAN
St. George area surgery center is seeking a instrument technician/central processing. This individual will be responsible for processing and sterilizing instruments for surgical cases. This individual acts through collaboration with other members of the health care team at the facility.
JOB SUMMARY
Cleans, packages, sterilizes and stores the supplies, instruments and equipment.
Reports to: Director of Nursing, OR Team Leader
Supervises: None
QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated understanding of sterilization principles required.
Experience in central processing functions preferred.
Requires constant and frequent judgment and response. Require language skills for communication in American English.
Requires high-level visual and auditory acuity, for timely response and patient care activities. Ability to move quickly in response to physician and patient needs, occasional overhead and low reaching, bending, and the ability to exert force of up to 50 lbs. occasionally, up to 20 lbs. frequently and/or up to 10 lbs. constantly.
OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE
Category I exposure to bloodborne pathogens, frequent exposure to chemical hazards and may encounter radiation hazards.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Adheres to the sterilization process policies and procedures.
1.1. Cleans each item according to manufacturers' instruction.
1.2. Inspects instruments for damage and defects; lubricates items as required.
1.3. Determines that each item is in good working condition.
1.4. Sorts and arranges items into proper trays according to established policy and procedure.
1.5. Wraps trays and individual items according to established policy and procedure.
1.6. Accurately labels each item with name and expiration date.
2. Correctly operates sterilizers, ultrasonic washer and other equipment for processing items.
2.1. Positions items correctly in sterilizer and selects proper cycle; seeks assistance when needed.
2.2. Checks indicators/integrators for proper functioning.
2.3. Performs and documents required biological monitoring tests on all sterilizers according to established policy and procedures.
2.4. Maintains availability of supplies for continuity of recording throughout sterilization process.
2.5. Cleans sterilizers according to established policies and procedures.
3. Maintains inventory levels and accurate records.
3.1. Performs inspections of all sterile items in the Facility
3.2. Checks for outdated items and package integrity of wrapped sterilized items; replaces items as necessary.
3.3. Places items in correct location.
3.4. Maintains adequate inventory of supplies for the sterile processing area.
3.5. Maintains and updates the instrument tray inventory list.
4. Notifies OR Team Leader / Director of Nursing of equipment and instruments needing repair and or service.
5. Maintains sterilization log books (Autoclave, High Level Disinfection, etc).
6. Assists in room turnover between cases when available.
Position will start as part-time or PRN but opportunities for full time work may be available once trained. Dental and vision insurance available to part time employees, health insurance available once full time.
