The Water/Wastewater Treatment Operator is responsible for the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities, including sewage grinders, augers, compactors, water softening systems, aeration equipment, and electrical systems. Manages all sewage ponds, associated wetlands and a chlorine contact chamber, as well as ensures the proper functioning and maintenance of the water softening systems to maintain optimal water quality. Submits all necessary testing reports in accordance with local or state regulations.

The incumbent should be able to perform all of the following functions at a pace and level of performance consistent with the job performance requirements.

  • Provides operational oversight and monitoring of all wastewater treatment plant equipment. Manages and operates water softening systems, operates and maintains a chlorine contact chamber to ensure effective disinfection; operates and maintains aeration equipment to ensure proper oxygen levels; and biological treatment processes. Adjusts chemical dosing and equipment settings based on testing results and operational data to ensure compliance with quality standards.
  • Performs routine inspections, maintenance and repairs of water softening systems, conducts regular testing of water and wastewater samples for hardness and other quality parameters (pH, chlorine level, turbidity), making adjustments as necessary to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and customer requirements. Monitors and adjusts the operation of water softeners to maintain hardness levels within established standards and troubleshoots and resolves issues with water softener. Maintains detailed records of water softener operations, maintenance activities and water quality test results.
  • Maintains inventory of water softener chemicals and supplies, such as salt and resin, and coordinates with suppliers for timely reordering.
  • Performs routine inspections and maintenance of sewage ponds and associated wetlands, monitors and manages water levels, vegetation and wildlife to ensure the health and stability of the ponds and wetlands. Implements best practices for the sustainable management of these natural resources.
  • Performs routine inspections and maintenance of the main electrical supply and associated circuits to ensure safe and reliable operation. Troubleshoots electrical issues and coordinates repairs as needed. Works closely with electrical contractors and maintenance personnel to resolve complex electrical problems.
  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on all plant equipment, conducts routine maintenance and cleaning of the chlorine contact chamber to ensure proper operation. Ensures all equipment is operating efficiently and safely and reports any issues promptly. Troubleshoots equipment failures and coordinates repairs with maintenance personnel.
  • Monitors adherence to all federal, state, and local regulations governing wastewater treatment, water softening operations and wetlands management. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of State Department of Public Health and Environment regulations and licensure requirements.
  • Maintains detailed and accurate records of all operations and laboratory results. Prepares and submits all required testing and regulatory reports, including water quality testing and operational performance reports to the state agency as required, in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Implements and adheres to safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Participates in safety training and drills as required.
  • Responds to emergencies, such as chemical spills or equipment malfunctions, in accordance with established protocols.
  • Addresses customer inquiries regarding water quality, treatment processes, and environmental impacts and collaborate with other municipal departments and contractors as necessary.
  • Domestic U.S. travel may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma, GED certification or equivalent is required.
  • Associate's degree in environmental science, engineering or a related field is preferred.
  • Must hold a valid State Wastewater Operator Certification, Class D or higher. Water Treatment Operator Certification, Class D or higher is preferred.
  • Two years of experience in wastewater treatment plant operations, including experience with sewage grinders, augers, compactors, water softening systems, and/or aeration equipment. Proven experience in the maintenance and operation of water softening systems, including troubleshooting and resolving common issues.
  • Experience with electrical systems maintenance, including
    troubleshooting and repair of main electrical supply and circuits is preferred.
  • Experience with pond and wetlands management is preferred.
  • Proficiency in the use of computerized monitoring and control systems is preferred.
  • Must demonstrate strong communication and problem-solving skills, attention to detail and the ability to perform complex mathematical calculations related to chemical dosing, water quality analysis and electrical systems.
  • Must be available to work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, holidays and on call for emergency situations
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Minimum age requirement:  Must be at least 18 years of age.
