The Child-Friendly Space (CFS) Volunteer will support the CFS in Disasters Coordinator by assisting in the operation of a safe and engaging space for children affected by disasters. Volunteers will help facilitate activities, ensure the safety of the children, and provide support to families in need. This role is vital in creating a nurturing environment for children during challenging times.


Note: This role is essential to supporting families during emergencies. Volunteers play a key part in helping children feel safe and supported during times of crisis.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Child Supervision:
  • Assist in supervising children to ensure their safety and well-being.
  • Provide attentive care and maintain a positive environment.

Activity Support:
  • Help set up and lead educational and recreational activities, such as arts and crafts, games, and reading sessions.
  • Engage with children to foster social interaction and emotional comfort.

Space Maintenance:
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment within the CFS.
  • Ensure that all materials and equipment are used appropriately and replenished as needed.

Family Support:
  • Greet and interact with parents and caregivers, ensuring they feel welcome and informed.
  • Communicate any concerns or observations about a child’s well-being to the Coordinator promptly.

 Team Collaboration:
  • Work closely with the CFS-D Coordinator and other volunteers to ensure seamless operations.
  • Attend training sessions and regular check-ins with the Coordinator.


Qualifications:
  • Experience:
  • Previous experience working with children is preferred but not required.
  • Willingness to work with children in high-stress and sensitive situations.

Skills:
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patience, empathy, and adaptability in working with children of various ages.

Attributes:
  • Dependable and punctual.
  • Positive attitude and a team-oriented mindset.


Requirements:
  • Must pass a Live Scan background check.
  • Ability to commit to a minimum of 4 hours per shift, with flexibility for evenings and weekends.
  • Comfortable working in a temporary shelter environment.


Training and Support:
  • Volunteers will receive training on child protection, safety protocols, and trauma-informed care practices. Ongoing support will be provided by the CFS-D Coordinator and shelter staff.

  • Interested individuals should complete the volunteer application form. Selected applicants will be contacted to schedule a Live Scan background check and orientation session.

Clear pre-employment background check requirements, including local, state, and national criminal records checks, sex offender registries, employment, education verifications and child abuse registry check (if required by state regulations) are required post job offer and prior to employment.
