Operations Manager – Pulp & Paper Cargo
The Operations Manager is a critical role responsible for overseeing the safe and efficient handling, loading, and unloading of pulp and paper products at ports and terminals. This position ensures that operations are conducted in compliance with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and company policies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the entire stevedoring process for pulp and paper products, including the loading and unloading of cargo from vessels, trucks, and railcars.
- Ensure the safe handling of pulp and paper cargo, minimizing damage and delays during transit.
- Monitor equipment usage and ensure the maintenance of cranes, forklifts, and other loading/unloading machinery
- Develop and implement efficient cargo handling plans to maximize productivity.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations, including OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and maritime safety standards.
- Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and implement corrective actions.
- Organize training programs for stevedoring staff to promote safe work practices and accident prevention.
- Coordinate with shipping companies, terminal operators, and logistics teams to ensure timely arrival and departure of vessels.
- Oversee the correct documentation and reporting of cargo, including bills of lading, manifest, and customs declarations.
- Plan and optimize cargo loading and unloading schedules to reduce idle time and ensure efficient use of resources.
- Supervise, train, and mentor stevedoring staff, ensuring they follow industry best practices and company protocols.
- Allocate tasks based on cargo types and operational requirements to ensure smooth workflow.
- Manage shift schedules to ensure adequate staffing levels during peak periods and unforeseen delays.
- Track key performance indicators (KPIs) such as turnaround times, cargo damage, and operational efficiency.
- Prepare and present regular reports to senior management regarding operational performance, staffing, and safety compliance.
- Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the overall efficiency and effectiveness of stevedoring operations.
- Liaise with clients, shipping agents, and port authorities to ensure the timely and efficient movement of pulp and paper shipments.
- Address customer inquiries and resolve any issues related to the stevedoring process or cargo handling.
- Maintain positive relationships with stakeholders to ensure high service levels and customer satisfaction.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Maritime Studies, or related field (preferred).
- Professional certifications in stevedoring, safety management, or maritime operations (a plus).
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in stevedoring or port operations, with at least 2 years in a management or supervisory role.
- Experience in handling pulp and paper products or other bulk cargo is highly desirable.
- In-depth knowledge of safety standards, port operations, and cargo handling procedures.
