The Barge Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems onboard barges and associated marine equipment. The mechanic will work closely with the barge crew and shore-based support teams to ensure maximum equipment uptime and compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
Barge Mechanic Responsibilities
The Barge Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems onboard barges and associated marine equipment. This role ensures the safe and efficient operation of barge machinery including engines, winches, pumps, cranes, and auxiliary systems. The mechanic will work closely with the barge crew and shore-based support teams to ensure maximum equipment uptime and compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
Barge Mechanic Responsibilities
- Perform routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on barge engines, generators, pumps, compressors, winches, cranes, and related equipment.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic system failures and perform corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs and equipment records.
- Support operations during mobilization, demobilization, and equipment testing procedures.
- Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations, including proper handling and disposal of waste materials.
- Assist with inventory and ordering of spare parts and maintenance supplies.
- Participate in safety meetings, drills, and training sessions.
- Collaborate with engineers, electricians, and other technical crew to resolve complex issues.
- Respond to emergency breakdowns and support rapid troubleshooting during critical operations.
- High school diploma or GED required; technical school certification or vocational training in mechanics or marine systems preferred.
- 3 years of mechanical maintenance experience, ideally in a marine, offshore, or industrial environment.
- Strong understanding of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and mechanical troubleshooting.
- Experience with marine equipment such as winches, pumps, air compressors, and generators.
- Knowledge of U.S. Coast Guard, ABS, and other applicable maritime safety standards.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and drawings.
- Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs., work in confined spaces, and perform duties in a marine/offshore environment.
- Willingness to work extended shifts and rotational offshore schedules (e.g., 14/14 or 28/28).
- TWIC card, HUET, and other offshore certifications preferred or required depending on location.
