This role is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of cranes, managing a team of operators, and coordinating cargo handling activities to meet customer requirements.
Director of Crane & Equipment Operations Responsibilities
- Oversee daily crane operations, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and operational efficiency.
- Manage and train crane operators and support staff, ensuring adherence to best practices and safety procedures.
- Enforce OSHA, maritime, and company safety standards, conducting regular inspections and training programs.
- Coordinate with maintenance teams to ensure optimal functionality of cranes and heavy equipment, minimizing downtime.
- Collaborate with port logistics and terminal teams to schedule and optimize crane usage for efficient cargo handling.
- Work closely with shipping lines, port authorities, and customers to ensure smooth operations and high service levels.
- Monitor operational costs, implement cost-saving initiatives, and ensure budget adherence.
- Develop and execute response plans for equipment failures, weather-related disruptions, and emergencies.
- Allocate cranes based on cargo volume and vessel schedules.
- Train new operators and foster a safety-conscious culture.
- Maintain accurate records of crane operations and performance metrics.
- Address and resolve operational issues promptly.
- Schedule and oversee routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs including bucket, spreader and hoppers. Responsible for contingencies (e.g. Power, parts). Maintain all tools, parts and supplies
- Implement strategies to enhance crane productivity and efficiency.
- Maintain strong relationships with union leadership and labor.
- Manage third-party crane planning and support, including contracting.
- Ensure compliance with all permitting requirements and other federal, state, and local regulations.
- Lead and collaborate on facility improvement projects to support company growth.
- Prepare financial analyses of opportunities and risks, and manage capital budgets and projections.
- Identify and solicit bids from contractors, evaluate results, and recommend contract awards.
- Ensure adherence to all health and safety standards and report issues timely.
Director of Crane & Equipment Operations Position Requirements
- Minimum 10 years of experience in crane operations, port logistics, or a related field.
- Prior leadership or managerial experience in a port, terminal, or heavy equipment environment.
- In-depth knowledge of maritime regulations, OSHA standards, and safety compliance.
- Experience with container cranes, bulk handling cranes, mobile harbor cranes, and other port equipment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with crane operation software is a plus.
- Valid TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) preferred.
- Experience working with Unions, including ensuring compliance with contractual obligations and maintaining positive relationships with Union leadership.
