Director of Crane & Equipment Operations Job Summary

Seeking an experienced Crane Operations Director to oversee crane and heavy equipment operations at the Port of Wilmington in DE. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of cranes, managing a team of operators, and coordinating cargo handling activities to meet customer requirements.

Director of Crane & Equipment Operations Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily crane operations, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and operational efficiency.
  • Manage and train crane operators and support staff, ensuring adherence to best practices and safety procedures.
  • Enforce OSHA, maritime, and company safety standards, conducting regular inspections and training programs.
  • Coordinate with maintenance teams to ensure optimal functionality of cranes and heavy equipment, minimizing downtime.
  • Collaborate with port logistics and terminal teams to schedule and optimize crane usage for efficient cargo handling.
  • Work closely with shipping lines, port authorities, and customers to ensure smooth operations and high service levels.
  • Monitor operational costs, implement cost-saving initiatives, and ensure budget adherence.
  • Develop and execute response plans for equipment failures, weather-related disruptions, and emergencies.
  • Allocate cranes based on cargo volume and vessel schedules.
  • Train new operators and foster a safety-conscious culture.
  • Maintain accurate records of crane operations and performance metrics.
  • Address and resolve operational issues promptly.
  • Schedule and oversee routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs including bucket, spreader and hoppers. Responsible for contingencies (e.g. Power, parts). Maintain all tools, parts and supplies
  • Implement strategies to enhance crane productivity and efficiency.
  • Maintain strong relationships with union leadership and labor.
  • Manage third-party crane planning and support, including contracting.
  • Ensure compliance with all permitting requirements and other federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Lead and collaborate on facility improvement projects to support company growth.
  • Prepare financial analyses of opportunities and risks, and manage capital budgets and projections.
  • Identify and solicit bids from contractors, evaluate results, and recommend contract awards.
  • Ensure adherence to all health and safety standards and report issues timely.
Director of Crane & Equipment Operations Position Requirements
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in crane operations, port logistics, or a related field.
  • Prior leadership or managerial experience in a port, terminal, or heavy equipment environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of maritime regulations, OSHA standards, and safety compliance.
  • Experience with container cranes, bulk handling cranes, mobile harbor cranes, and other port equipment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with crane operation software is a plus.
  • Valid TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) preferred.
  • Experience working with Unions, including ensuring compliance with contractual obligations and maintaining positive relationships with Union leadership.

  • Crane Operator Certification (NCCCO or equivalent)
  • OSHA Safety Certification
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • First Aid and CPR Certification
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Certified Crane Inspector (CCI)
  • Certified Rigger (NCCER or equivalent)
  • Maritime Security Awareness Certification
  • Hazardous Materials Handling Certification
