Spanning 308 acres, it features 10 berths, extensive storage facilities, and is equipped with multiple cranes for efficient cargo handling. The port is renowned for being the top North American port for imports of fresh fruit, bananas, and juice concentrate. It offers quick access to major highways and rail services, making it a vital hub for logistics and transportation in the region.
Job Summary:
Seeking an experienced Crane Operations Director to oversee crane and heavy equipment operations at the Port of Wilmington in DE. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of cranes, managing a team of operators, and coordinating cargo handling activities to meet customer requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Crane Operations Management: Oversee daily crane operations, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and operational efficiency.
- Personnel Supervision: Manage and train crane operators and support staff, ensuring adherence to best practices and safety procedures.
- Safety & Compliance: Enforce OSHA, maritime, and company safety standards, conducting regular inspections and training programs.
- Equipment Maintenance & Reliability: Coordinate with maintenance teams to ensure optimal functionality of cranes and heavy equipment, minimizing downtime.
- Operational Planning: Collaborate with port logistics and terminal teams to schedule and optimize crane usage for efficient cargo handling.
- Customer & Stakeholder Coordination: Work closely with shipping lines, port authorities, and customers to ensure smooth operations and high service levels.
- Budget & Cost Control: Monitor operational costs, implement cost-saving initiatives, and ensure budget adherence.
- Emergency & Incident Response: Develop and execute response plans for equipment failures, weather-related disruptions, and emergencies.
- Resource Management: Allocate cranes based on cargo volume and vessel schedules.
- Training and Development: Train new operators and foster a safety-conscious culture.
- Data Tracking and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of crane operations and performance metrics.
- Issue Escalation and Resolution: Address and resolve operational issues promptly.
- Maintenance Oversight: Schedule and oversee routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs including bucket, spreader and hoppers. Responsible for contingencies (e.g. Power, parts). Maintain all tools, parts, and supplies
- Operational Efficiency: Implement strategies to enhance crane productivity and efficiency.
- Relationship Management: Maintain strong relationships with union leadership and labor.
- Third-Party Coordination: Manage third-party crane planning and support, including contracting.
- Compliance Monitoring: Ensure compliance with all permitting requirements and other federal, state, and local regulations.
- Project Management: Lead and collaborate on facility improvement projects to support company growth.
- Financial Analysis: Prepare financial analyses of opportunities and risks, and manage capital budgets and projections.
- Bid Evaluation: Identify and solicit bids from contractors, evaluate results, and recommend contract awards.
- Health & Safety Standards: Ensure adherence to all health and safety standards and report issues timely.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Minimum 10 years of experience in crane operations, port logistics, or a related field.
- Prior leadership or managerial experience in a port, terminal, or heavy equipment environment.
- In-depth knowledge of maritime regulations, OSHA standards, and safety compliance.
- Experience with container cranes, bulk handling cranes, mobile harbor cranes, and other port equipment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with crane operation software is a plus.
- Valid TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) preferred.
- Experience working with Unions, including ensuring compliance with contractual obligations and maintaining positive relationships with Union leadership.
