Position Overview

This position is responsible for managing the daily operations of an ethanol plant including staffing, operations, and logistics. This plant employs 44 personnel and operates 24 hours per day. This plant produces approximately 225,000 gals./day of undenatured ethanol, 550 ton/day of dried distillers' grains with solubles and 90,000 lbs./day of corn oil.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate the ethanol plant while adhering to the 5 main priorities of: safety, environment, quality, production, and continuous improvement. Safety is the first priority and the operations manager must have or develop a complete understanding of OSHA requirements for plant safety, contractor safety, and process safety management (PSM) for ethanol and denaturant / gasoline.
  • Environmental compliance is the second priority. This facility will not intentionally pollute the environment and will mitigate any deviations in an acceptable manner. Regulatory visits or inquiries will be involved on an as needed basis.
  • Quality is pivotal in the plant. This position will lead the effort to communicate quality goals to the operations staff and work with other managers to develop plans to monitor quality and identify changes that need to be implemented in order to maintain quality goals.
  • Production drives the plant, but is looked at as the fourth priority. This position will manage staffing and monitor production for the facility, work with production and management team to maximize production, make decisions for operation, and ensure quality is maintained. This person will focus on efficient operation of the processes and utilize resources in an effective manner.
  • This position must stay involved in the training and education of the operations group and to promote communication between the operations staff members. It is important for this position to be mindful of developing staff for future positions, evaluating training needs, and addressing issues affecting performance. This position will evaluate staff on a regular and consistent basis.
  • This position will work with the management team as a senior level manager and make recommendations for process improvements. It is important for this position to stay involved in projects affecting the operation. These decisions will be based on daily production, maintenance, and projects and must be evaluated while being mindful of plant budgets, capital budgets, and labor plans.

Role Expectations

  • This position must be able to manage personnel in a professional manner. This person must be able to supervise large, complex, and / or technical situations and to support the business and production teams to provide consistent operations at the plant.
  • This person will be accountable for the performance of the plant and results of the production team. This manager will be responsible for maintaining discipline to remain in line with company guidelines and rules.
  • This role will be responsible for departmental plans with priorities to focus on resource and operational needs. Decisions will be guided by the policies, procedures, and the business plans and will receive guidance from the plant manager. Guidance for technical issues will be provided to employees, peers, and customers as needed.
  • This person must be able to follow up on needs and issues. They must be detail oriented to look for changes in the process and with equipment. Also, there must be a high degree of ownership and dedication to running the plant and taking care of the staff and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum qualifications may include associate's or bachelor's degree in applicable field. Five to seven years of progressive management experience in an agricultural related field is a benefit. Familiarity with industry standard equipment and technical expertise is required in some form. A valid driver's license is required for the position. The qualified applicant must be within 30 minutes of driving distance to the plant. This person must be able read and write in English. Computer literacy is required to assemble and access reports and other forms of communication. CORN, LP conducts drug, alcohol, and medical testing on all applicants. Background and reference checks are also part of the hiring process. A copy of our handbook will be provided with a job offer and this outlines our protocols for employment. Drug and alcohol randomized testing and testing for cause are also part of the protocols for employment at CORN, LP.
