This position will serve as the Waterfront Director for 4-H Camp Owahta, an overnight summer camp owned and operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Cortland County, located in McGraw, New York. The primary responsibility of this position is to further the mission of camp through the planning and delivery of programs on the camp’s waterfront that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the camper’s age and abilities. Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to: overseeing and coordinating 4-H Camp Owahta’s waterfront and swimming activities, maintaining the standards that lead to a quality program, and maintaining the waterfront facilities including daily inspections, set up and tear down, and general upkeep. This position will operate waterfront programs in compliance with the American Red Cross requirements for water safety. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned and deemed appropriate by the 4-H Camp Owahta Director and/or Camp Manager. (NOTE: This position does not include regular cabin responsibilities, but it is possible it could include occasional cabin responsibilities.)

POSITION DETAILS:
This position is a full-time exempt position, 100% FTE. The summer salary for this position is $4,000.00.

POSITION INFORMATION:
Required Qualifications:
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Must have a minimum of: one (1) season experience as a camp aquatics director at a NYS camp OR two (2) seasons experience consisting of at least 12 weeks as a children’s camp lifeguard at a waterfront beach which had more than one lifeguard supervising at a time OR 18 weeks of previous experience as a lifeguard at a waterfront beach which had more than one lifeguard supervising at a time.
- Must have American Red Cross Lifeguard Supervision and Management Certification, or equivalent certification approved by NYS Department of Health (will assist with re-certification if necessary).
- Must have current American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguard Certification, or equivalent certification approved by NYS Department of Health.
- Must have current NYS Department of Health approved cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certifications (will train if necessary).
- Must have current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification, or equivalent certification approved by NYS Department of Health (will assist with re-certification if necessary).
- Desire, ability and willingness to work and live in a camp community and to reside at 4-H Camp Owahta, McGraw, NY (including overnights) the entire time 4-H Camp is in session.
- Ability to work flexible hours which will include evenings and weekends, as appropriate.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Job Responsibilities - 95%
1. Plan, direct, and supervise a safe and fun waterfront program.
- Write (with the help of waterfront lifeguards) lesson plans that meet camp goals.
- Assess 4-H camper swim levels upon their arrival at 4-H Camp Owahta and assign to appropriate American Red Cross swim levels.
- Supervise all waterfront activities, including swimming, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and non-instructional activities.
- Utilize a “Buddy Board” system to ensure accountability for all 4-H campers and staff at the waterfront.
- Ensure compliance with all safety procedures described in NYS Department of Health regulations for residential camp bathing beaches, and maintain daily NYS Department of Health beach reports.
- Report all incidents or injuries occurring at the waterfront to the 4-H Camp Director and/or 4-H Health Coordinator, and assist in the completion of incident reports.
- Monitor the progress of classes, and maintain records of all instructional classes, including lesson plans.
2. Train and supervise waterfront staff.
- Assist and provide all 4-H camp staff with orientation, instruction, and training in all waterfront procedures and equipment in pre-camp orientation/training.
3. Manage the physical facilities and equipment in the waterfront program area.
- Set up waterfront area prior to camp season, during staff training.
- Teach and monitor proper use of equipment.
- Conduct initial and end-of-season inventory, and store equipment for safety.
- Check equipment and make repairs (or report to the Camp Director).
- Submit requests for equipment and supplies when needed, ensuring timely arrival of materials.
- Monitor the beach, swim area, and water quality daily, and secure waterfront when not in use.
4. Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
- Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures, keeping campers safe at all times.
- Set a good example to campers and staff in regards to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule and sportsmanship.
- Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.
5. Provide orientation for campers on waterfront area, procedures and safety guidelines upon arrival to 4-H Camp Owahta.
6. Cooperate with Directors, Coordinators and Counselors in the development and implementation of all 4-H Camp Owahta activities.
7. Assist in the overall evaluation of the summer camp and make suggestions for the next camping season.
8. Keep in direct communication with the Camp Director to communicate pertinent information regarding camper and staff activities as appropriate.
9. Perform other duties as assigned and/or reassigned as directed/required by the Camp Director.
Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%
- Attend 4-H Camp Owahta orientation/training program, and participate in staff meetings and required training events as scheduled.
- In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.
- Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
