Adult Education - ELA Teacher

ADDITONAL INFORMATION:

Adult ELA teachers work part-time in a classroom setting two evenings per week to provide instruction in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary acquisition, plan and implement lessons based program curriculum and student needs, assists with student registration and assessment., maintain monthly reports and student records, and use appropriate instructional strategies to help ELA learners at each of the six developmental levels within the program.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Considerable knowledge of the regulations and policies related to English Language Acquisition (ELA), and of the concepts, principles and methodologies of ELA instruction.

1. Working knowledge of current learning theory and recent research in ELA.

1. Working skill in the use of Microsoft Office, Internet/email, and technology to deliver Distance Education instruction.

1. Ability to develop instructional goals to design and deliver instruction and to assess students’ learning.

1. Ability to organize, schedule and monitor work assignments; to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

1. Demonstrated ability in decision making, problem analysis, interpersonal relationships and planning.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Instructs students in English emphasizing the acquisition of listening, speaking, reading, writing grammar and vocabulary acquisition.
2. Communicates regularly with the regional specialist and program coordinator to optimize effectiveness of services.
3. Create detailed and contextualized, sequential lesson plans.
4. Attend mandatory staff meetings and a minimum of two staff development sessions yearly to keep abreast of recent developments in education and to show evidence of continuing professional growth.
5. Recruit, register, administer pre and post-tests, and provide orientation to students
6. Evaluate each student's progress on an ongoing basis and share the information with the student.
7. Keep essential records necessary for the efficient operation of the program.
8. Conduct and incorporate goal-setting into classroom lessons and review goals monthly.
9. Service students individually and in small groups.
10. Guide learning activities of each student and provide learning situations suitable for each student in an atmosphere that encourages learning.
11. Become informed and comply with the policies and regulations of the school division and the program.
12. Serve as a public relations agent for the program and the school system.
13. Make follow-up phone calls and send postcards to absent students.
14. Perform administrative duties and other duties assigned within required time frame

REQUIRED EXPEREINCE:

Applicants should have considerable teaching experience, preferably in an adult environment. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education or related field is required. MA ESL/TESOL preferred or BA/BS with experience teaching in ELA. Instructors are required to maintain BEST PLUS and Assessment Policy certifications as mandated by the VDOE.

Reports to the Coordinator of the Adult Education Program.
